A nice addition to the skyline, and possibly the best place to live in town, especially if you like the arts.

The symphony, opera, theatre, museum, outdoor sculpture garden, and the Woodall Rogers deck park, all with in 3 blocks of the place.

Building groundbreakings are few and far between these days.

So maybe that’s why more than 200 people turned out on a hot summer morning to watch construction kick off on the Museum Tower condo project in downtown’s Arts District.

The 42-story building is the tallest building started in Dallas since work began on the Cityplace Tower in the mid-1980s.

And getting the $200 million Museum Tower under way at Pearl Street and Woodall Rodgers Freeway has taken more than a decade.

“To say the least, this is a momentous occasion for us after 12 years of work,” Museum Tower partner John Sughrue told the crowd Thursday morning. “People are asking us 'Why start now?'

“The answer is easy – look around you.”

The luxury residential high-rise is across the street from the Meyerson Symphony Center and will overlook the Nasher Sculpture Center and the new Woodall Rodgers Park.

“Rewind a couple of decades and think that this whole area was a used car lot,” said Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. “I believe there is going to be a lot of commercial development in this area, and business will move here.”

The 122 condos planned in the oval glass tower will start at more than $1 million each, and the skyscraper will take more than two years build.

“This will be one of the great addresses in the U.S.” said Museum Tower partner Dan Boeckman.

It’s also one of the few skyscrapers going up in the country because of the recession and credit crunch, which has cut off funds for most building.

“This tower is one of the first in the U.S. to turn the corner in the economic slowdown,” said project architect Scott Johnson.

Museum Tower is being paid for by the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System, which will own the building and plans to profit from the condo sales.

I'm still not sure I understand why fewer highrises appear to be breaking ground in the US than in almost any other sector of the globe. It wasn't like the US was the hardest hit.

Great to hear it is FINALLY going ahead. I love this tower and had actually been invited, by the developer, to come see it 3 yrs ago but never made it down.

I was about to ask where this tower will be in relation to the rest of the skyline. Thanks for the pic. The location indeed will have a great impact on the skyline.

I don't think any city in the US is booming, and there really isn't a market for this in Dallas. With that said, Museum Tower is a nice,sleek tower that DT Dallas' skyline desperetely needed, and it will have a nice impact as well. Will watch go up for sure.

I love this tower and as a skyscraper geek, I can't wait to see it in person.

That said, 122 units that start at $1 million and then rise quickly in Dallas????

Good luck with that.

There are 35 units that remain unsold at the Ritz-Carlton. That's out of 95 total units in the tower. The Ritz has a better name and a MUCH safer location in which to market to Dallas' high end buyers. They've been marketing the Ritz for 3+ years now.

The W Hotel Residences are even in worse shape. There are numerous unsold units in that tower and many of the ones that did sell are presently leasing.

I'm amazed at the sheer amount of distinctive and striking new city landmarks Dallas is gaining right now. In addition to this tower which serves as a marker for a burgeoning arts district with more one-of-a-kind buildings than one could ever imagine, you've got the coming Woodall Rodgers Park and it's landmark glass fountain, the Perot Nature & Science Center, as well as three new Santiago Calatrava-designed bridges that will soon span the Trinity River. If Dallas wasn't already a photogenic destination, it is surely destined to have one of the most distinctively snapshot-worthy cityscapes in the country in just a few short years.
