Downtown district town hall meeting Wednesday

The city of Austin is hosting a town hall meeting Wednesday to discuss proposed Core and Waterfront District and the Northwest District plans.

The gathering begins June 2 at 5:30 p.m. at 625 E. 10th St. in the Waller Creek Center, and will be attended by city officials and Austin Downtown Commission members. The group hopes to recommend plans to council that set goals for each area, while preserving its historic landscape, identifying its best use, placement, transportation and other necessary upgrades.

The 97-block Core and Waterfront District encompasses an area recognized as Austin's original town site from Lady Bird Lake on the south to 11th Street at the foot of the Capitol Square on the north, and from Shoal Creek and Nueces Street on the west to Red River Street and the Convention Center on the east.

It looks like they're starting work on the South Austin Hospital expansion. This will add 3 floors to the original building, for a total of 7. There's a large yellow crane up at the site now. I'm not sure if the crane is for the hospital tower itself, or the parking garage which was supposed to get two more levels. I'm excited about the garage getting two more floors. There's going to be some really nice views up there. That would make the garage 10 levels.

Wow. If this happens, it would be huge for the southern half of the metro. It would be South Austin's version of The Domain.

A Dallas-based land investment fund is proposing an ambitious mixed-use project on 599 acres in southern Travis County. Estancia Hill Country could become the largest new planned development proposed for the South Interstate 35 corridor.

Over the next 10 to 15 years, the Stratford Co. envisions nearly 10 million square feet of development at Estancia, including a 1.9-million-square-foot corporate office campus; another 1.5 million square feet of general office space; a hospital; a hotel; nearly 1,600 apartments and townhomes; and almost 277,000 square feet of shops and restaurants.

Steve Sanders, a consultant for Stratford, said 130 acres would be set aside for parks, open space and trails.

I agree, its too spread out and not dense enough. I would like to see double the height of those buildings at least and not as spread out. Lets make that ammount of density that they hope for in half the space and dedicate the rest for natural open areas...

What else would you expect to see right off I-35 ten miles outside of downtown? Would you rather have another suburban sprawl cul-de-sac style subdivision? Big Box? Or a typical, unwalkable strip mall?

What I see here is dense housing, height of 4+ stories, and no surface parking lots. Those things would be darn good for this area. Whether it gets off the ground or not is another matter... but ya'll are being unnecessarily harsh on this.

I'm kinda with Hookem on this one. Compared to the sprawl of Southpark Meadows, this project is much more palatable. However, I don't imagine this will ever happen.

Looking at the map provided by AAS this development would interfere with a possible future connection of 45 southeast and 45 southwest. I would rather have the connected tollroad than this development personnally.

Something similar happened with the portion of SH45 that runs through Round Rock. The big La Frontera development was built knowing that the toll road was coming. One of the apartment complexes in the development was cut off from the rest of the development when the Toll Road was built.

Gardensoul: just because it is only a certain distance from downtown does NOT mean that it isn't in the middle of nowhere. It is in the middle of nowhere.

It's not in the middle of nowhere!! Its at the magical junction of Southwest Onion Creek, Southeast San Leanna, West Creedmore and North Buda!!

Yah hookem is right its better than South Park. Gosh I wish that South Park Meadows would have been Like the Domain Instead of what it is. Hey if that land Is going to be developed I changed my mind Im glad its this.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. The recently approved, but still unfunded, 45 SW would benefit the developer so much, they would probably gladly adjust the south edge of the project to accommodate. Besides, the property still needs to go through annexation and zoning, and dedication of ROW will probably be a condition of approval. It might even prompt the developer to increase the height of the remaining office buildings and change some of the surface parking to structured parking.
