ASU/UofA Downtown Phoenix construction thread

the U of A Foundation owns that (now) large parcel and has plans for it related to the Biomedical campus. Sadly, they have already torn down the 2 old houses that were on the north side of this parcel, on Polk St. One was from 1912; they looked like they were in very good condition. too bad they could not have been incorporated into the project or moved to infill lots in Garfield.

They are definitely gutting the 🞵🞵🞵🞵 out of the building on the NEC of 7/Van Buren. Is that where this building you posted is going in? Also, are they building another building on the NWC on the biomedical campus?

I'm so confused, there are going to be TWO new buildings on 7/Van Buren??

The building I posted is the one that will be going up on the NWC of 7th St and Van Buren...the HESB or whatever it's called, the one they said had a groundbreaking a few weeks back but you said you didn't notice any activity going on.

yeah they just now put up a little construction fence.

I'm way more interested in the Science Center, it's pretty large scale!

they are gutting that 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 from the inside out. I'm not sure what's going on but there have been crews in there every day, and the two houses are gone. I think the are going to build something.

Nothing new here except for the final demolition of what could have been a cool restoration project. Like anything in this town it's tear it down and we'll lament about the consequences later.

Workers have been stripping recyclable items such as doors and wiring from the 175-room Ramada Inn at First and Taylor streets in downtown Phoenix to prepare the site for a parking lot.

A Phoenix group of concerned residents and business leaders, Downtown Voices Coalition, tried for several months to stop the demolition, arguing the hotel, once known as the Sahara Motor Inn, was a historic site and should be preserved.

City Manager David Cavazos has said the demolition is a done deal. Crews demolished part of the motel in May.

DEMOLITION: Jeremy Legg, Phoenix economic development program manager, said this phase costs about $700,000. Workers will begin razing the remaining buildings later this month.

PARKING: Legg said after the site is razed, workers will turn it into a parking lot, which could be opened to handle overflow from the nearby Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel.

NEXT STEP: Within two or three years, Arizona State University hopes to expand its downtown Phoenix campus to include a new building at the site for a new College of Law. The state budget crisis has forced ASU to wait for funding.

I thought it was quite hte opposite. They graded the lot and haven't touched it since. The NEC of 7/VB has been unfenced and there are now people working in that building. 🞵🞵🞵 is it?

The project under development at 7th & Fillmore is the UofA's Health Sciences Education Building. Per the school's facilities website they are wrapping up the intial construction phase (site prep, underground utilities). Looks like construction isn't scheduled for completion until May 2012. This building is critical to the expansion of the medical school downtown and the development of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus.

Not sure this belongs in the ASU downtown campus thread (since ASU is no longer a partner in the the UA Medical School-Phoenix campus), but here is more info. on additional buildings going up on the PBC (Phoenix Biomedical Campus):

- The city has issued an RFP for a 100k s.f. biomedical research and laboratory facility to be built between the TGen and ABC I buildings, and completed by early 2013 (soon after the HSEB is finished in late 2012).

- An RFP will go out this fall for a 1,000-space parking structure, located north of the TGen building.

2.6 acres adjacent to the NEC of 7th St. and Van Buren is owned by the UA Foundation, and the rehabbed building will be for additional office space. (Also, a planned 250k s.f. Arizona Cancer Center may also be built on the parcel):

Further into the future will be the 290k s.f. ABC II building (just north of the HSEB under construction), and eventually a teaching hospital and other support facilities.

does anyone have a site plan for this thing? I'd like to see how it is laid out on the block. I hope to hell it doesn't turn it's back on 7th street.
