Anyone have an update on when the SFU Residence Tower is supposed to start? Last I read it was supposed to be done by the end of next year?

So I was walking along City Parkway this morning and outside the Hockey Shop I noticed a billboard. It's got copies of the City of Surrey's request for expropriation for the land those buildings are sitting on. I knew Mayor Watts was fast-tracking the development of the new city hall, but this is flying along.

I've also heard that Surrey is looking at constructing a 15,000-17,000 seat arena somewhere in the City Centre.

Definitely could work as a replacement for the Pacific Coliseum.

I think they should build the stadium where the Best buy is at old Yale and KGB. its close to skytrain and it would look cool driving up KGB at night. Kind like the staples center in LA.

I have a crazy feeling if they do build a stadium it's going to be in that large tract of land near gateway skytrain station between the Scotia Tower, the new recreation centre, CityPointe and the Surrey Food Bank.

Question? isn't this stadium a integral part of Surrey's 2012 BC games bid? (which they won) I thought I read that somewhere...

Hardly integral. But it did resuscitate discussions about a stadium, the likes of which have been on and off for decades. At one time, the City wanted to build a stadium in South Surrey where the Rec Centre now is. They had also wanted to build one in Tynehead in the 80's I believe. I doubt this will happen for quite some time - we don't have a team that needs the facility, there's no way public money would go into it as there's more pressing needs, and with the new stadiums in Abbotsford, Langley, and the renewed BC Place, I don't think there's even a market for one.

Still scratching my head about how Abby with a smaller population has a team yet Surrey doesn't.

Surrey Heat?? I could see that, just crappy that they're the farm team for the Calgary Flames lol

^ Wouldn't it be amazing to have the Canucks' AHL team in Surrey? That would be an awesome arrangement.

that would be the dream. But like i said i'd settle for ECHL for one we wouldnt have to pay to fly teams out here like abbotsford has to with the AHL.

Well Surrey doesn't have any arena in the entire city that has actual seating for a major sports event.

Abby has a rink, Chilliwack has a rink. Surrey doesn't.

Kind of think poaching the Giants from the Coliseum could work. I don't know if Surrey could actually support a WHL team on it's own. (just see Brampton in the OHL - poorly attended team, just outside of Toronto)

However, that's what Abbotsford said, and look at them, they have a AHL team that's not really popular in the city (i think something to do with the Flames is part of the reason why) but they have a new arena, that averages about 2,000 fans a game and it seats I believe 7,000.

the flames is a HORRIBLE match I think. Vancouver fans in general HATE the flames I think. I mean I know I sure do

seems like the arena is getting some decent concerts overall.
