I am going to say that he is definitely the best educated out there. A Master of Public Policy from JFK School of Government at Harvard is nothing to sneeze at.

I am torn too. I really, really, like both of them. I think both will be excellent, but I am leaning towards Nenshi because he has a really strong municipal focus. I am kind of upset now because I believe there will be a lot of vote splitting happening now. Hawkesworth won't help that much.

There was a left split and a right split in the 2001 election. In the end the furthest left of the main candidates won (at least when you look at his position on government asset sales, taxes, user fees, etc).

The voting public is pretty bright in Calgary - they know what they are doing. They still want more of everything and are willing to pay for it. Hence the lack of outrage at the water/and or sewage treatment plant budget etc, etc.

One of our grad students was Connelly's campaign manager for his city council run. She lambasted Naheed for "saying he has an MBA." I corrected her- he has never lied and never said he has an MBA. His degree is an MPA, Master of Public Admin from JFK, and he teaches in a business school. How this sort of thing evolved into "he's lying about his background" makes me distrust this student and makes Connelly look really sleazy, making up shit like that.

I was at an event last night, and heard Hawkesworth mention off the cuff to someone that he was indeed running for mayor.

Hehr has been pretty invisible as a candidate since declaring. I like Hehr as well, but actually hearing him speak about municipal issues, he just doesn't seem have the same grasp on city issues compared to Nenshi.

seriously, just watched raw footage of Nenshi's CBC interview (link) and despite the fact that he didn't physically throw his hat through a hula hoop, (and he's a little campaign brochure-y at times) he's already got an actual platform of substance, and not a bunch of punny tweets and folksy cliches.

I want to see him debate Joe Connelly so hard.

Oh he visits the forum, when I went down to city hall to speak in favour of Plan It he "knew" me from here.

I caught his interview on QR77 this afternoon, very well spoken and actually talked about what he WOULD do. Even saying he wasn't going to be just throwing out soundbites and little media quotes, but that he would have substance in what he was saying.

I was impressed, but still want to hear more and from others as this race goes forward.

That's more than a little creepy. I mean, we all like to think we're experts and important and stuff, but really - this is an after-hours pub chat most of the time, with cool pictures.

(Now when I meet mayoral candidates, they can know me as "that Internet jackass who doesn't take this urban development stuff seriously")

Nenshi is constantly being interviewed by Global on various political issues, so he's got a lot more face recognition than many candidates. I've seen the guy on the news for at least a few years now. I may recognize his face better than McIver.

^ You'd probably be surprised how many people actually read this forum. For every one of us who posts on a regular basis, there are multiple times more people that just lurk and follow the discussion. For example, as I type this - in the overall Canada section and its sub threads there are 536 people browsing, only 102 of which are actual signed-up members of the site.
