^Indeed. I've always loved Ramsay Ravine because it removes any indication that you are in the middle of a city (barring that bridge). Descending Ramsay on a pedal bike nearly provides the same rush that Groat Road gives on a crotch-rocket.

^ I love how many places in the city have that effect. Even on my new bike-commute route through Forest Heights Park, spitting distance from downtown, it's easy to forget that you're in a city, let alone the middle of one.

You could look at that two ways...

1) Sadly it's amazing how much historic character was lost it seems

2) Amazing how quickly Edmonton grew to become a major city with a real high rise dense Downtown

If only the latter wasn't so much at the expense of the former. I guess it's fine 101 St is almost devoid of old buildings (not completely) for high rises...but did we really need to have the masses of parking lots at the Warehouse District or on 100th Ave? Granted these parking lots could be seen as a great thing in 20 years if we redevelop most of them to good designs of offices, condos, mixed use, institutional, etc. which recreate vibrant communities and the op to start from scratch.

^ I wish we couldve kept our old downtown buildings, and been able to build the financial district some where else....I would imagine the city center airport had major influence on that decision.

That was in the late 50s around 58-59. I can see my boyhood home in the upper portion. Ross Shepard hadn't even been built yet, and there was no road where the Yellowhead is now.

Looking at the photo the Westmont neighbourhood as well as Woodcroft are fairly new. No industrial development at all, just the start of what would become inland cement.

I like how this picture, Jasper Avenue looks 8 lanes wide without the medians in the middle... (6 lanes for movement, 2 lanes for parking/bus stop)

Every downtown - be it in Europe, North America, Asia, Latin America - tore down old buildings to make way for skyscrapers in the central areas. It's just reality. I'm fine with the demolishing as long as two things are met: the area will retain at least some of the original buildings and it will be replaced by something that will still create street life and not be turned into a but ugly parking lot or parkade. Obviously some areas should probably have had stronger historic preservation like Old Strathcona and perhaps Boyle Street, but being so tight on new buildings everywhere would be unnecessary, especially in a Downtown which is supposed to change lots over time to new demand (meaning need for more density). Plus, if we could only build new things in new areas or if there was a disaster (fire, earthquake) then it'd greatly increase sprawl as many people just want newer places to live or work and leave less options in the city. The problem is the destruction of character went overboard and most of it demolished street fabric for dull street frontages filled with blank commercial office tower walls and barren parking lots.
