But there is nothing close to the ferry terminal that is actually historic. Even the "Historic Properties" area adjacent to the Marriott in Halifax is largely a recreation. The rest of it is Disneyfication. I see no reason why these could not have been built.

In regards to this destroying what is now historic properties - these images are actually proposals for the Alderney Landing Ferry terminal - not Halifax. They were proposed by hired consultants, commissioned by the city of Dartmouth and were not the result of a competition. This also included another phase that would see a large hotel constructed were Queens square is today and the possibility of a office tower on the roof of the terminal. Similar plans were proposed for Halifax around the same time, but plans were very much separate.

I also agree with Keith P. - there isn't much historic here anymore. Especially now that they have ripped up almost all of the cobblestones, rather than repairing them.

So many positive changes could be made to scotia square.

I kind of like this view - it is very urban. I think that if just the lower podium were opened up with more glass and open areas, then the Duke and Barrington towers wouldn't have to be changed.

Ah yes. I see that now. It is the Dartmouth side.

It is interesting to note that brutalist architecture was common between the 50's to 70's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brutalist_architecture). In a 100 years time (if the Scotia Square still exists) then Heritage Groups of the future might be trying to preserve Scotia Square as a good example of brutalist architecture. This shouldn't be taken as sarcasm.

I think it is terribly compromised by the site -- Duke Street is not a friendly hill to build on and there is only so much that you can do. The real opportunities are on the Barrington St side and on Abermarle, both of which could stand some more pedestrian-friendly features. But the owners (Crombie) are known for throwing around nickels like manhole covers, so don't expect much.

What is the connection between Sobeys and Reit Crombie (if any)? Reit Crombie's Chairman is Frank Sobey. Is Reit Crombie associated with Empire Company Ltd.?

This photo from Flickr is kind of cool:

A lot of new buildings have been added to this area over the last few years. It would be nice to see something go up on this part of Hollis Street - I wonder if the rumours of a redevelopment of the South Street townhouses will materialize?

As much as we all have been disappointed over the slow pace of development and growth; I guess the old slogan of slow and steady wins the race really is true.

Great shot! (edit.... i dont know what crane that is... these pictures must be from last summer)

This image should be different in a couple of years!

This should look different in a couple of months!

Woodside could develop nicely... I could see towers and a boardwalk.

The new Salter boardwalk... best shot I've seen of it. Darmouth in background.

I looked up the date on the main page for the photo and it says October 2009 (the tree leafs back that up) so believe it or not that is the crane for the Trillium!

This was in this weeks Dartmouth Community Herald.
Its an old view down Wentworth Street. I had no idea the post office had such a nice tower on it. It is such a shame that so many of these came down.

OK, that doesn't work. I googled "datmouth ns post office photo" and on the second page of links there is one for Dartmouth Downtown Busines Co., with a walking tour of the area, and the post office tower is on page 19.

Here's the link: http://www.downtowndartmouth.ca/images/DDBC_Final_LowRes_Revised.pdf

Not sure what happened, but vBulletin will try to shorten links for you with an ellipsis (just the text, then the URL goes in the URL tag).
