I don't go to Surrey often, nor do I ever use Colubmia, so I haven't noticed it. They never had it before. But it's great that they have added it. Interestingly, this article (previous page) that was posted reveals the financial costs of the two bids SNC/Lavalin and Bombardier, ones that were never revealed to the public.

There's a covert effort to prepare various station designs for Capstan St so that it can be built quickly when the the is right? I must say this design is definitely better looking than Lansdowne/Aberdeen, but I still think they could make the roof design more interesting.

Wouldn't that be for going Eastbound into Columbia?

Can't say I've heard the message. But I'm not usually out that way very often and 99% of the time I have my Ipod on. So I wouldn't hear it anyways. Also I'd assume that a train bound for the M-Line would have a similar message for that direction.

Looks cool, but really it's just glass with designs on them. Architecturally, the elevated Marine Drive, Lansdowne, Aberdeen, and Brighouse are all really simple and not show stopper pieces. But really, they are designed pretty well. They feel very light, bright, and airy, something which is missing for many of the Millenniun Line stations.

Nothing makes something covert like uploading it to YouTube.

This is just one of the typical exercises that UBC architecture or engineering students get to do. This one has made it 'into the wild' by a proud student (or team). I like attending their open house events, where I'm always impressed by the creativity of these projects which are usually better than anything that is actually built.

Capstan Way station will be built sometime in the future when the surrounding land gets developed. No surprises there, as there was a bit of controversy when the station was canceled during the construction of the rest of SkyTrain Canada Line. I think it was because the developer of the surrounding land was having financial difficulty (this was at the beginning of the Great Recession) and wanted City of Richmond to pay for the Capstan station to be built first, and the developer would pay back to the City in increments as each phase of the development was approved and built.

in other words ... Richmond pays $50 Million to build Capstan, and they only way they'll get their money back is by approving rezoning and higher density developments of the nearby land.

Richmond said no. The developer canceled the entire project including the Capstan station. It's just a matter of time for it to be revived (with the same owner, or with new ownership).

That is also a reminder for the commuter drones heading home at the end of the day to know that they are on the proper train. Of not, exit at Columbia & wait for the train (King George or VCC) you want to take you home.

There's nothing so amusing as seeing the look of shock / horror / confusion / anger when a commuter drone realizes they are heading to Scott Road instead of Sapperton. And lets hope they don't get dinged for being in Zone 3 with a two zone monthly card as well (pouring salt on the wound).

I thought that the bid pricing was revealed during the Hazel & Co trial.

I thought Concord Pacific was still in the process of doing a major development there. I swung by their show-place down by Science World in February and they were very much touting the Capstan development. Has cancellation happened since then? or is it still alive?

I take the skytrain every day and I heard that message two days ago for the first time.

Capstan is still a go, I believe it was delayed a bit during the economic turmoil of the last few years, but it should be moving forward in the near future.

I'm sure someone a little more in tune with the current situation can corroborate this.

Capstan would be a great addition to the no.3 portion for vendors in that area, the distance between bridgeport and aberdeen is too far for the shops/services in between.

Reading the Richmond Official Community Plan (see thread in Suburbs forum) also makes it obvious that this station will be built in the near term. It is crucial to the city's downtown plan, and redevelopment will be at its greatest pace during the next 10 years according to the OCP.

I always thought it was the other way around. Most people along the Millennium line are used to it, and checking for the right train. I've found it's people from Surrey not realizing trains go other places. But I'll agree it does happen both ways, and if I was going to Surrey by mistake I would have a look of shock and horror on me as well.

I used to take the last train to Lougheed on weekends all the time, and at least 3/4 times, after exiting the tunnel after Columbia and seeing the river, someone would jump up out of their drunken slumber and go "Where the Fu$# am I?" I've been asked several times "how do I get to Surrey?" I've even been asked at a few times "Is this Surrey?" I would tell them to ride to Lougheed and take a taxi because it's the last train. Although, there have been a few times when someone really drunk and acting like an Ahole asked how to get back to Surrey and I told him to get off at Sapperton and go back the other way. I wonder how long he had to wait at Sapperton until he got kicked out and a taxi came to get him.

Now-a-days I sometimes take the last train to Surrey. GONG SHOW. The train is 110% stereotypical Surrey. I've seen people yell profanity at anyone, prostitute themselves, passed out on the floor, throw up, and even run out to take a pee on the platform at stations, But I never notice anyone at Scott Road there by mistake. But at least this new message will help drunk Surreyers get home and keep people from Coquitlam safe.

I think you are putting too much faith in a drunk person actually paying attention to what is being said on the PA system

yah when i commuted to columbia station to lougheed everyday without fail you would hear someone say "is this surrey?" or "does this go to surrey?" "this doesn't look like surrey" "how do we get back to surrey?"

Yes, I heard it on the Millennium Line today. The message was broadcasted before the doors closed at New Westminster. It was something like "This is a M-line train to VCC via Lougheed. Please change at Columbia for KingGeorge/Surrey". Hope less people will get confused from now on. The message was played in a man's voice from the 80s (same as the downtown track maintenance one a few months ago...). LOL

I must confess that I made the mistake and ended up at Scott Road one evening during the Olympics when I just wasn't paying attention.. I was sober as well!

The only good thing about arriving at Scott Road by accident is you can usually dart across the platform into a train that just arrived heading in the other direction.
