Schools graduating more students

WINNIPEG — Manitoba's high school graduation rate is on the rise.

Figures released by the province today show the grad rate in 2009 stood at 80.9 per cent, compared with 72.4 per cent in 2001.

"This increase can be attributed in part to innovative programs and mentoring supports already set up in schools and communities to encourage students to stay in school," Education Minister Nancy Allan said today.

Allan presented the annual Celebration of Excellence in Teaching awards today at the Legislative Building.

The award for outstanding new teacher went to Jason Hofer of Hofer School, Greenwald Hutterite Colony in the Sunrise School Division. Hofer is the first recipient from a colony school to receive a minister's award for excellence in teaching.

This is because of the nofail procedure. I actually know people who have made it through high school and come out actually not even being aware they learned anything or how they graduated. Good old mercy pass.

Actually, that's not true. You can be placed in the grades up until grade 8, but after that, if you don't get the credits, you don't graduate.

Some places have difference systems in place. High School in some places is 10-12 and others is 9-12.

High school, no matter what it's called, is always 9 - 12 in Manitoba. That is when you need to start getting credits and those cannot be given without the course attached to them first being passed.

Point being Teachers give mercy passes to avoid confrontation and the possibility of social problems.

Like I said, from my experience in the system, that's only generally done until you reach the credit system in high school. After that, it's up to you.

Yes, but the credit system begins in Grade 9, no matter where that Grade 9 is taken. I went to grade 9 in a middle/elementary school. I still had to get all of the same credits as anyone who takes Grade 9 in a high school.

I got quite a few mercy credits in high school, actually. At least 4, out of 30. In one case, I did almost none of the coursework but aced the test, and "passed" with about 25% (though it magically became 50% on the last day of school). There were people in high school with me that were even worse, but still passed, often because they were on a sports team or they had mental difficulties and teachers wanted to pass them on to the next teacher. The only ones who failed were the ones who never showed up. In Ontario, if you're over 16 and stop going to school, they'll just kick you out.

But I'll have you know that I worked hard and passed all of the courses the mattered. The mercy passes were only in electives, like World Travel and Cooking. And no one ever fails gym. Even me.

Just because grades don't really mean anything in high school doesn't mean you can't get a free pass on a credit. What grade you're in after that point depends on how many credits you have, not which courses you take. I took grade 10 courses in grade 9 and grade 10 courses in 'fifth year'. (The extra year many students here take because the curriculum is fucked up here and it's difficult for anyone who isn't a kid with all the time in the world to graduate on time. Hooray for teachers being lazy and assigning us more homework than schoolwork!)

I got a pass in french class, I just didn't get it.

I wasn't saying it was part of the system to apply but it seems more and more often that the case is happening.

i failed gym for refusing to wear gym shoes twice i protested and wound up earning my gym credits through the leadership program worked my ass off and injoyed it even got my leader ship credits
