Excellent news, Charlottetown continues to be the most active city for development in the region (for it's size). Halifax had better watch out!

Yeah, it's crazy how much development there is for a city of only 60,000!

I thought I would post this, it's comparing the new Cox & Palmer building in Montague with what used to be on that site. Quite the transformation!

Charlottetown awards tenders for two major infrastructure projects
The Guardian

City council has taken the next step in its attempt to make traffic flow better in Charlottetown.
Tenders were approved Monday night for two major infrastructure projects slated to begin this year.
Island Coastal Services was awarded the contract for widening University Avenue, coming in with the low submission of $4,965,500 (GST extra).
Council also approved a tender for the Mount Edward Road-Allen Street roundabout. Birt & MacKay Backhoe Services Ltd. gets the contract, coming in with the low submission of $1,557,973.97 (GST extra).
It is the second and final construction phase of the project.
University Avenue is being widened from two lanes to four lanes — from Brown’s Court, across from UPEI, to Buchanan Drive (Canadian Tire) — in order to alleviate the bottleneck of traffic.
This project will create dual-lane travel in each direction from Belvedere Avenue to Capital Drive. Crews will not only widen the road, but build turning lanes and make other changes to the existing right-of-way.
Upgrades will be made to the University Avenue/Enman Crescent intersection for better left-turning traffic, and sidewalks will be built on the west side of University Avenue from Belvedere Avenue to Enman Crescent.
Crews will also review and upgrade traffic control signals at University Avenue and Belvedere and Belvedere and Mount Edward Road.
In terms of the roundabout at Mount Edward Road and Allen Street, the city hired an engineering firm whose expertise is in traffic and asked the firm what the city should spend its money on — a redesigned intersection with traffic lights and dedicated left-turning lanes or a roundabout.
Both projects were said to be identical in cost but the consultant urged the city to go with a roundabout, explaining they are much safer, slow traffic down and keep traffic moving at all
times.

This is great news but these traffic changes should have been made 25 years ago! Why did this take so long!!

Charlottetown gets back to roadwork

Spring construction is getting an early start in Charlottetown thanks to the mild weather, with crews returning to work on two major projects this week.

Motorists heading into Charlottetown from the north on Monday will notice construction has started again on widening University Avenue near UPEI. The project was on hold over the part of the winter.

When the work is done there'll be two lanes of traffic in both directions from Belvedere Ave. to Capital Drive.

This Friday crews will be returning to the site of the new roundabout at Mt. Edward Road and Allan Street. Part of the work will include tearing up some of the old asphalt.

Height Variance Application for New Hotel

An Application has been approved on the 12th of April to allow for the height variance of the new 6 storey hotel at the corner of Water and Queen.

12-Apr-10, 31,43-45 Queen Street & 64 King Street, Height variance.

It looks like it will all go ahead as the government is cementing the deal with the Federal Government for the land for the convention centre.

Homburg Hotel Progress

The floors are starting to come together. There is another four floors to go on top of the steel that is in this picture.

That's great! It's coming along really quick with the nice weather. Putting up the steel is one of those things where once they get started, it moves along quite easily. Can't wait to see this get topped out, to see just how tall it will be!

I was driving home today and noticed that the employees are moving into the Cox & Palmer building in Montague. So I pulled over and went inside to check things out. The lobby area is very open, with high ceilings and the sunlight from the clock tower coming down. The offices are very nice, each with a view of the river, and the board room and kitchen lead out to a deck right on the water. One very interesting feature was that the basement had a gym / fitness area. Great idea in a great building!
Also, there is a Morley Annear Trucking building being rebuilt after a fire a few months ago, a new apartment building in the suburbs, and nice new signs that say "Welcome to Montague the Beautiful". I will post some pictures later this week.

Where about is the apartment building going up in Montague? There is also a heritage home in charlottetown being turned into a 10 suite building by Inn on the Hill.

First off, welcome hogan2! The apartment building in Montague is between Donald MacLeod Drive and Douse's Road, and although it's only one storey, it's a very nice-looking building with decks and nice siding.
I noticed something going on at one of those nice old houses on Fitzroy about a week ago, but I didn't know what. Great to see more development downtown!

So theres an apartment building starting in Cornwall, and did anyone hear about the new school in souris being started, aswell as a new seniors home there too?

I didn't hear anything about a new school in Souris! Just wondering, would that be the elementary or the high school? Sounds good, though.

There are so many residential buildings popping up in Stratford and Cornwall, it's not even funny. The apartment building is probably a two or three story one. Also, the Eliot River school in Cornwall is expanding their sports fields, by adding a new turf field, a few ball fields and some tennis courts. I know this because the new Holland Hurricanes football team might play at the new turf field and UPEI.

I wonder, since Holland College has football, soccer, and rugby teams, will they invest in a field / stadium close to the campus... Maybe on the old Irving Oil Sands property, that way the Joe Ghiz Park could be sort of on the campus!

i think they are doing a 1-12 school for souris, guess it would have kindergarten too. it would be hard to say if holland collage would do that, the city seems to have plans for that whole area down there, but a stadium would look good, but not as nice as a new arena.

Good point. But, the only reason I mentioned that was because a friend of mine who works at HC told me that building on that property had come up at a meeting one day. I think it's a great idea, but you're right that a new arena might look better. Maybe the HC field (or the arena) could go on the other big empty lot across the street, to replace that lonely little car wash.

MONTAGUE — Islanders in Eastern P.E.I. can look forward to the construction, renovation and retro-fit of 64 social housing units in seven different communities across the region in the coming months.
Senator Michael Duffy, on behalf of the federal government, and Janice Sherry, provincial minister of Community Services and Seniors, announced the $1 million funding through Canada’s Economic Action Plan here Friday.
“The announcement we’re making today will bring long term benefits for communities across the province,” said Duffy. “These investments will make P.E.I. an even better place to live, work and grow.”
Montague received the bulk of the money with $235,000 going towards the construction of a new 10 unit complex for seniors. Charlottetown will also receive a new complex which will house eight units for seniors and three for people with disabilities. Upgrades to current social housing will be made to 19 housing units in Souris, 10 in Georgetown, six in Mount Stewart and one in both Cardigan and Vernon Bridge.
“We’re so pleased, it’s wonderful for seniors,” said Corena Gairns, a board member for the P.E.I seniors federation and a resident of Eastern P.E.I. “People are living longer. We’ve got so many seniors now the necessity is greater than ever and it will continue to be.”
Duffy said this is a good way to get the local economy moving.
“We’re into the construction season and what better way to get the trades people to work, electricians, carpenters and plumbers will all be employed in the creation of these new units and the retrofitting of those that are being fixed up.”
The $1 million is for local housing initiatives for seniors, persons with disabilities and families in Eastern P.E.I.”, said Sherry.
“Working cooperatively together, the provincial and federal governments are improving the quality of affordable housing on P.E.I. and I look forward to continuing that partnership into the future.”

And finally, I saw some activity at a huge, valuable empty lot on the AA MacDonald Highway just outside Montague. I heard a rumor that a big new fitness centre and gym will be built there.
