I like I like. I still haven't fully grasped how much of an impact it's height will have considering it'll be taller than one wall

Unfortunately, its greater tallness will be somewhat undercut by its being on lower ground.

Yes, that's true, but remember, its impact will be be most noticeable in the immediate vicinity, say two or three blocks in each direction, and although One Wall makes a bold statement, especially being on higher gound, it is quite a ways south, not really in the centre of downtown.

I think the Geogia will be impressive and dramatic, right smack there in the middle of downtown.

At least it'll be higher than its immediate neighbours, Pacific Centre, The Four Seasons, HK Bank, and even Park Place. And of course, its design is rather daring and original, too, which will contribute largely to its presence.

Yes but its skinniness will make it look taller than it is so a bit of a break even.

Well to be fair, one wall does have an extremely skinny side.

Something tells me that The Georgia, located where it is, being the height it is (one of the taller ones) and having the design it has, is going to turn out to be a surprising "head-turner" when it's finished. The space it occupies is set back just enough to "fill out" the downtown area, in that it is not right on the street, but occupies a space that has always been formerly nondescript and easily forgettable. Wait on this one. It's going to have more of an impact than we realize at the moment ........

^concur...although the tower design could have been more inspiring.

It'll be the most reflective tower in its immediate vicinity - so it should stand out.
Previous towers in the area were designed to blend with the stone and copper of the Hotel Vancouver and the Court House/VAG.
The only other glass towers nearby are TD Tower and 701 West Georgia, which have tinted glass but aren't particularly reflective.

^^Absolutely. In fact, there were plans for a slightly higher, glass façade tower in that location, but for some reason city hall made the owners/ developers scale it back. If you go to the main FORUM for all cities, and find Vancouver - projects cancelled, you'll see it. (or what it WOULD have been)
Whether it would have better or worse, I don't know, but I'd like to see a couple of really elegant, striking buidlings downtown, built in the International style or a variant thereof. (Personally, I'd love to see a supertall, done in a classic, elegant crescent shape, but I doubt that will ever be)

Different developer. Previous developer sold the hotel and the site.
New developer changed architect and concept for the tower
(the City had placed restrictions on the previous developer's proposal,
but had nothing to do with the change in architect and change in concept for the tower)
i.e. The new developer added office space instead of hotel space in the new tower,
nixed above-ground mechanical parking (building underground parking under the ballroom instead) and
made suites larger than the 8ft repeating unit in the previous Bing Thom proposal.
I think we got a better podium on the tower versus the relatively flat facade of the Bing Thom proposal
(which needed to have a rectangular floorplate since it hid mechanized parking behind)

Pic by me today:
Note how the floorplate seems to step in on each side compared to the office floors.
Hopefully there won't be too much of a gap or discontinuity between the office and residential floors.

Is it me or is this building moving really, really slowly? More than three weeks to do the latest floor? Two floors since the Olympics? Is that normal?

People have said, "Just wait until construction gets above the Georgia Hotel, then it should really take off." Well, construction has been above the Georgia Hotel since the beginning of the Olympics, and only two floors have been added since then. At this rate, it will literally take another two years or more to top out.

Jameson (which also has heritage building issues and a complicated floor plate) is going to be done soon, and it started construction at the same time as Georgia.

This seems strange to me.

It could be that the original slowness was largely due to tying in the base of the new building to the existing hotel Georgia, which might have been technically complicated. Now that they've cleared the top of the hotel, I suspect things may start moving upwards at a faster rate. I hope so, anyway.

I think you need to re-read my post, particularly the second paragraph.

I believe there was also a floor plate switch about a week ago. with the new forms ready to use the thing should start to rise fast now.

If it doesnt then there might actually be an issue such as a poorly performing contractor or supply delays.

They are using a different system with trusses to support each floor in the residential portion. First pour using this new system was a week ago Wednesday, and the columns the next day. Last week on Monday, they lifted the trusses up on Monday for next floor, did the rebar and conduit Tuesday through Thursday, and poured the next floor on Friday. I'm guessing they'll keep going up at this rate, maybe improve with a rhythm at about one floor every 8 days.
