2010 Hockeyville

Yep Dundas won as Canada's 2010 Hockeyville. They'll get $100,000 for arena upgrades and an NHL pre season game. Dundas got over a million vote. Congrats!

Dundas: Canada's Hockeyville
Takes title with late surge

Dundas has won Kraft Hockeyville 2010 and is this year’s most passionate hockey town after securing 1,066,855 votes.

The town of Dundas will host a 2010/2011 NHL pre-season game between the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators at J.L. Grightmire Market Street Arena on Sept. 28, receive $100,000 in arena upgrade money from Kraft Canada and be showcased on CBC.

“It was pretty awesome … it hasn’t fully sunk in yet,” said Barry Forth, co-chairperson of the Dundas Hockeyville campaign.

Forth barely got any sleep last night and was losing his voice, but nothing can stop his and all of the community’s excitement.

“They talked a few years ago about shutting our arena, and the people have said no way,” he said.

The four runner-up communities — Bishop’s Falls (928,004 votes), Stanstead (222,517), Cranbrook (786,165) and Lawrencetown (723,571) will receive $25,000 each in arena upgrade money from Kraft Canada.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the communities who participated in this year’s Kraft Hockeyville competition. Your community passion, spirit and love of the game of hockey came through loud and clear in the over 12,500 submissions we reviewed,” said Dino Bianco, president of Kraft Canada. “This year, it's 'Gotta Be Dundas!' We congratulate you for your outstanding effort to become Kraft Hockeyville 2010 and look forward to helping you create a lifetime of memories when we visit this September."

"Whether it was their very first strides on skates, their first team practice or their first game, many of our players began their careers in a community rink," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. "Kraft Hockeyville celebrates that indelible connection, and it is a pleasure to be part of a program that so appropriately recognizes these communities' enduring commitment to our game."

“Congratulations to Dundas from the NHLPA," said Mike Ouellet, NHLPA chief of business affairs. "As many of our members grew up and learned to play hockey in places just like Dundas, it is fantastic to see the community and its residents earn the opportunity to host an NHL game through their dedication to the game.”

This should tick Gary Bettman and the Leafs off.

I wonder if they realize that Dundas is a part of the city of Hamilton.

I really don't think they care either way.

Bettman will be spending some time at Dundas/Hamilton. It's up to the NHL on how to spend the $100,000 on the arena. Obviously he'll have to meet with the Mayor. That should be interesting haha.

A game in Hamilton without the Leafs getting a cut certainly will tick them off. Anytime a game has been held here in the past, that does not involve the Leafs they have been paid off by the promoters to allow it.

A cut of what?

I doubt that there will be any charge for tickets to the game in Dundas. Even if there were to be a charge, it would probably be something nominal that would get donated to a charity. And the arena probably seats less than a couple of thousand people anyway, so even if tickets were to be sold at 50 bucks a pop, revenue would still amount to something in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Come on.

My point in an around about way is the NHL wants nothing to do with the city of Hamilton and the Leafs have asserted their rights to this territory by charging promoters to stage pre season games here in the past.

Now a part of the city of Hamilton has been chosen as Hockeyville and been awarded a pre season game. I wonder if Gary Bettman knows that Dundas is part of Hamilton. Given the recent shenanigans involving the NHL and the Phoenix situation and the fact that he has made it quite clear that he wants nothing to do with this city, I would love to know his reaction once he finds out Dundas is actually in Hamilton.
