^ Toronto has plenty of houses right within its defined downtown area. I can see many of them looking outside of my office window.

The Beltline is a nice transition between the core and the suburbs... It makes Calgary feel bigger. No need for highrises in there, every big city on the East Coast has a transition zone like this that just make the city feel more "urban". How can you pretend to be a big city when you have single family housing right next to downtown?
Here's another shot by Regulator 75 that shows the fabric south of the Central Business District, including the western portion of the Beltline, Lower Mount Royal, and Bankview. There are other communities besides the beltline that has a mid-rise fabric, even it if is mixed with early 20th century houses - such as South Calgary, Bankview, Lower Mount Royal, Sunalta, Mission, Cliff Bungalow, Bridgeland, Crescent Heights and Sunnyside. It's not 50 storey office buildings with just bungalows 20 ft away like some aerial images make it seem like.

That is a great picture.

I think having houses right beside or even in downtown is kind of neat, Calgary still has a few. What I don't like is those 4 storey wood frame, vinyl covered suburban style apartments, leave that 🞵🞵🞵🞵 in Tuscany or Evergreen.

Edmonton needs some glass in that part of downtown. Cool shot though.

Not single-family houses. Rowhouses and semis, yes, but those are mostly apartments anyway.

Anyway,

And just for fun, here's pretty much every last remain downtown Calgary house that is left, or was when I lived there:

And my fave of them all:

I was going to say somewhere around 1900 but the color picture made me think it was a bit later.

A few of the numbers in the bottom left look like they read "18"... perhaps 1918? That's an impressive find!

I love this look. The forced short depth-of-field, gives the image the look of a miniature model of a city.

A lot of art directors for print ads and TV commercials are using this technique again, to elicit a sense of nostalgia. It subconsciously reminds baby boomers of stop-action animation, television shows of the 60's and therefore a sense of comfort and familiarity is imbued in a product, in the consumers mind.

OK enough psycho-babble... Cool pic!

^ Personally, I can't stand it when it's faked, especially since it's such a fad right now, too. It's not as bad if it's actually done with a real tilt-shift lens, but when it's 'Shopped, it looks very 'Shopped.
