There's already too many grocery stores in that area. A new type of retail is needed there.

Governor Riley signed the Redstone Development bill today. Construction is expected to begin in the spring! I'm surprised at how fast this is moving along.

EarthFare update, this will help those who were part of the Southern Market closings

The target opening date for the Earth Fare store – in the former Circuit City location at 5900 University Drive -- is May 12.

The Asheville, N.C.-based chain of supermarkets specializes in natural and organic foods. The Huntsville store will be Earth Fare's first store in Alabama.

Patti Bates, human resources recruiter with Earth Fare, said that a job fair for the Huntsville store will be scheduled in early April.

Old Lincoln Mill going organic: Farm animals, lofts and theater all part of plan

Wayne Sisco, the man who oversees the $9 million renovation of Lincoln Mills on Meridian Street, walks past the rooster, prancing on a hill by the mill's former Dye House.



Sisco's plan for Lincoln Mills, built in 1901, includes:

Restaurants
Loft homes, offices and galleries
Organic farming and food processing
A theater and museums
A Sustainability Center that focuses on a lifestyle that leads to living "more lightly on the land.''
For now, the complex is known as Lincoln Mills. It's a 200,000-square-foot facility on seven acres, all owned by Dr. James Byrne, a local eye surgeon who bought the old mill in 2007.

Several tenants are already in the facility - Greengate School, a microbrewery and an old school printer, among them.

Development news has seemed slow lately, so here are my minor contributions.

• Signs have gone up recently on Hwy 72 near Slaughter announcing that the expected Krogers is coming soon.
• Construction on The Grove at the Cummings Research Park Biotech Campus has begun.
• Looking forward to having a local Earthfare! We've been shopping at the one in Columbia, SC for years now when visiting back that way!

I got word that a business just signed a lease on half of the old Linings & Things location and plans to open a fitness center.

This is supposed to be the largest Kroger in the Huntsville area. I hope it is a lot more upscale and nicer than the Hughes Rd. Kroger!

Also noteworthy is that the plans are for Jeff Rd and Slaughter to be expanded to 7(!) lanes near the intersection. I have to drive through this intersection every morning and can attest to the need for an expansion already. They also call for Jeff Rd to be expanded to 5 lanes for about half a mile north from Hwy 72.

All this is great, but I suspect we're in for some serious pain and delays during construction.

The Redstone Gateway Office Park seems to be on a roll these days. First, 2 weeks ago, the Governor signed the bill for the special TIF.

Now this week it looks like the Huntsville City government is pressing forward.

All good news for Huntsville!

The Redstone Park will be able to house 10-15,000 workers when complete.
Restaurants and shops will be located around the lake that will be part of the
project along with 2 hotels. Construction is predicted to begin maybe by August.
With Cummings Research Park/Bridge Street across I-565 and its 20,000 workers now, it would stand to reason that some major improvements to
the I-565/Research Park Blvd interchange would be required but so far I haven't seen any mention yet. It sounds like this will be a very classy development heavy landscaping, nice buildings etc. Except for a secure office park section, this project will be annexed into the city limits which means tax revenue.

Not only are improvements to that interchange more likely now, but we also have to consider that improvements to ALL of Research Park Boulevard are going to be needed. I think we're going to see some more Tennessee commuters with this project, with it's easy access via the Blvd.

Additionally, we're going to be seeing some more sprawl towards Decatur, since this is so easily accessed from 565. Decatur, Madison, and definitely Priceville will see a HUGE boost in growth from this.

Also, I think this could be really attractive to Google, who is looking for a city to install it's fiber network, or whatever it is. I mean, MILLIONS of office/hotel/retail/entertainment park that will be used almost exclusively by highly payed/highly educated government/contract/etc... employees is going to be perfect for what they're trying to do.

Yeah News 19 is reporting that this project will also have a concert venue, an amphitheater overlooking a lake, an academics campus, and 300 hotel rooms. The mayor was noted saying you have roughly 10,000 workers who make around $80,000 on the average....do the math. (I'm guessing he is low balling the number of workers with this project or he is talking about other Brac workers maybe?) That's a lot of skilled high paying workers who will need services. So the spin off jobs will be in the thousands too.

I dont think this project will ever end up being what they say it is. They are starting on it in a couple months but that will probably be the first of 20 phases to be built over 20 years if ever. I have heard no mention of a time frame for completion. Also, I think you can kiss the other planned billion dollar projects (3 I think) goodbye. There is no way this area can support all of these projects. I wish HSV could, i'm just being realistic.
