Notice how he never responds to my statement that there is no way "everyone" can ride without transferring at some point. Not matter what kind of system is built.
Just ask anyone who lives in Melbourne with experience riding the Yarra trams, which proclaims itself as largest tram network in the world.

If you don't know someone who has been to Melbourne, you may trust this opinion from their Public Transport Users Association(http://www.ptua.org.au/)

The great advantage of Melbourne's fare system is that it's multimodal: you can transfer from a tram to a train and then to a bus without having to pay an extra fare. This is as it should be because most people can't get from A to B using just the one mode of transport.

Transit monthly passes and FareSaver ticket prices will rise on April 1, 2010.
Cash fare prices remain the same.

According to Zwei that would be a failure. People are having to transfer.

I was eavesdropping in a conversation on the SkyTrain. I'm assuming they were Calgarians, but they were complaining how people complain here about low frequency of buses because their buses came every hour.

By the way, I think his claim that any transfer means a loss of 80% ridership is complete b.s. I'd love to take a look at the data upon which this claim was made, assuming that there is any data to begin with.

It could be accurate... if you're transferring to an LRT. Especially if it only runs every 15 minutes. What I don't get... is that since buses are far more flexible than LRT, isn't he advocating buses over LRT? They're the ultimate one seat ride. You could get on the #16 on Renfrew and end up in Arbutus village. One seat ride. Woo-hoo! Or how about taking the #129 to Kingsgate mall from Central Park.

I propose a new bus service, it would drive down every single street, guaranteeing door to door service. As per Zwei it would be the most popular choice as it would eliminate transfers, and as Zwei has stated people aren't concerned about speed only convenience, so what if you won't get to work for 3 day.

I'd bet my left Kidney that Zwei has never once lived in the city of Vancouver. He can't grasp the concept how much better a frequent bus service on a grid design works. Sure you have to transfer. But it allows you to get to most destinations with 1 transfer.

He also thinks that an increase in density does increase transit share. Which I fully disagree with. Because as the density of an area increases. It gets to a point where not everyone can own a car as there is not enough room to park all those cars. So at some point some people decide to forgo the ownership of a car and take transit. Of course he uses the west end as an example and says transit usage is poor yet it is high density. Maybe it is poor as most people are just walking or cycling to work. Especially those that work Downtown. No point of taking a bus when the walk is maybe 15-20 minutes.

This is what many of the asian cities does.. well, maybe not every single street, but if you live close to one of the major road (city grid), chances are you can get to most places with a 1-seat ride (ie. Taipei have up to 50 different routes on a street and around 700 different bus routes in an area that's smaller than Metro Vancouver). However, we do not have the population density for this so we'll have to settle with transfers. Even then, many people there still prefer riding the subway, even with the extra trasfer, because of its reliability (and to a lesser degree, speed, although it mostly apply for longer distance trips). Since the train does not have to deal with traffic, it allows people to plan their trip, instead of just hoping that they'll not getting stuck on the bus for hours (yes, traffic is really really bad there). And that's the main selling point of grade-separated rail system, and this is why we'll probably never see any at-grade light rail system getting built in the larger city there.

"Expensive" light metro is getting built everywhere in East Asia cities (in contrary to what Zwei states nobody still builds it). One of the systems to keep an eye with is Suzhou Light Rail (in fact a light metro with underground & elevated stations). It may become the largest light metro system in decade (overtaking Vancouver, and forget the bankrupting Dubai).
