Well, unless the government is going to give people 7% of the value of their existing home when they go to buy a new home... they shouldn't be charging it on new homes.

thats what the media keeps scaring on the news

the same way the scared everyone to run out and fill up when the carbon tax came in - i remember that night all the gas stations were busy the evening before midnight and than a couple days later the gas price was actually lower than it had been most of the 2 weeks before the carbon tax even started

yet the news kept saying the NEW TAX STARTS AT MIDNIGHT IT WILL BE MORE $$$ TO FILL YOUR CAR UP TOMORROW OMG its the end of the world do it now do it now

Currently getting a haircut, buying some food from supermarket and eating at restaurant do not pay PST. After July 1, the full HST would apply to these items.
I will have to cut back on eating out as the extra tax does add up.

I guess by that logic I could start drinking more once the HST comes in as liquor will be only taxed 12% instead of the current 15%. (5%GST+10%liquor tax)

I've been as guilty as the next guy but we really should move this back onto topic.

The Coal harbour rings were removed a couple of days ago, anyone know if they are returning? Someone mentioned they might be anchored off of UBC but I haven't heard anything official.

Just gotta chime in here. The Liquor board is increasing the price such that they won't decrease the end price for anything.

With regards to Wind, wasn't there some sort of arrangement with Black's (the photo people) as a distributor/retailer?

Pretty sure no. Telus bought Black's Photo in 2009.

Wind has some sort of deal with Blockbuster stores but I doubt they'll be around for too long.

Yume... Regarding the purchase of a presale... Unless it is going to have completion & possesion prior to July 1, 2010 it WILL be subject to HST, less any applicable credits that one may qualify for.

So if I were looking for a presale right now I'd keep that in mind during negotiations... But I'd wait until the Russian effect has worn off and presale interest has completely waned again.

A good real estate lawyer can save you a bundle, and for someone like you it might not be a bad idea to consult one.

Remember that a "substantially renovated" old home is considered by CRA to be new and therefore is subject to GST and soon to be HST.

Here is something I found, that appears to say differently from what has been said here.

* Implementation of the tax on new housing is to be grandfathered so If buyers signed purchase contracts for new homes, but do not take possession before the HST’s July 1, 2010 implementation, HST will not apply to their purchases.

I have a contract for Capitol from March 2007. I do not expect to have to pay HST, then!

I clearly could not have seen the HST coming 3 years ago

If your closing date is after July 2010 - you'll pay HST.

Yume you will still have to pay the HST, what will happen though is you will be eligible for a rebate. Your lawyer could do all the paperwork for you.

Didn't Bell buy "The Source" (formerly Radio Shack) stores from their American owner Circuit City who went bankrupt? "The Source" was apparently profitable despite the American parent company's problems, so it could provide a store for Bell products to compete with the Rogers stores.
