Before it was Meridian Bank, it was Valley Bank. Before is was Valley Bank it was blank for a few years (during which the building was painted that awful taupe color).

Apparently it had a logo even way back when...(this picture is from somewhere between 1964 and 1970)

Upon further review, the Hyatt logo wasn't until a bit later (maybe '98?). Here's a shot from 1995 (the construction is the Science Center):

Downtown circa 1987 (sans all logos):

not my picture, I scanned it from somewhere, but I have no clue where...

I wonder if there was a higher pop. density back in 1987 for DT. Anyone have any stats? (Especially in the surrounding neighborhoods, before they were slowly demolished one lot at a time.)

Very unlikely. Those neighborhoods for the most part were long gone by the late 80s, the process started in the 60s and ended (on a large scale anyhow) with the construction of Chase Field in 98. You didn't have anything like the Orpheum lofts and Im sure less houses and apartment complexes in the Roosevelt neighborhoods has tenants.

It would be very interesting to see a decade by decade chart showing the population of McDowell to the tracks, 7 to 7 though and see when the peak was and when the bottom was.

This is exactly what I'd like to see. Perhaps census.gov may have it. I'll have to browse through their data.

Just a shot in the dark, but I'll guess that the bottom was around 1995-1997 because both BOB and AWA were built taking out the deuce but before the big condo/apt construction period of dt.

The turquoise building, Guaranty Bank, was the first high rise built in Uptown. Note the GB logo. At the time it was built (1960) it was considered very modern.

BOB and AWA didn't take out the deuce.

I don't know what BOB was built on, but the Deuce wasn't that far east to my knowledge. America West Arena was built on Phoenix's Chinatown.

1995 sounds about right because that was more or less the end of urban renewal in Phoenix.

Warehouses and lots that were allegedly emerging into an arts district along Roosevelt & 5th street, but honestly I dont know if thats over stated or not as I am too young to remember.

There is a big white lit up "R" for Freeport McMoran in a similar style to their logo atop the building staying lit white throughout the night, with the outline of a slightly larger F to the left. It's looking good. Really good, actually. Menacing and imposing, complementing the squat fat tower.

A perfect fit for a company marked 4th from the bottom in a recent ranking of 581 companies by ethical standards, above only such darlings as Chevron, Halliburton, and Monsanto.

Its unfortunate that they are probably not going to light the crown up if they have that sign. Light them both up and the sign disappears.
