Unseen Seguin (TX)

Seguin (pronounced su-geen with a hard "g") is a small suburb 30 minutes east and part of the San Antonio MSA. It has a population of around 22,000 and is known 'round these parts for being the final resting place of Juan Seguin, a hero of the Texas Revolution. I took some photos there on a chilly January afternoon. Like a lot of smaller Texas towns, it's filled with great old building stock but not a lot of pedestrian traffic or use after the strip malls moved in closer to the highway.

Very cool. Glad to see Seguin on here. We always go through Seguin on our way to Corpus Christi and Port Aransas.

When I visited SARA Sanctuary near Seguin a few years ago, I drove around downtown, and thought Seguin was much better preserved than many small towns. Also liked the rolling, green countryside (it was early June).

Lots of smaller towns in south and central Texas with good old downtowns that are pretty well intact. Seguin is one of them. Thanks for sharing.

Nice! As far as I can remember, I've only driven through Seguin once. At least you have a photo of the pecan. When I was working on assignments for Texas Tourism, I had to find a photo of that pecan, which sounds like an easy task, but they are hard to come by. Ha.

Funny how the size, layout, architecture, etc of Seguin's downtown is similar to here in San Marcos. Same with Lockhart, Bellville, and other towns. I guess all the places around here have a similar past.

It's also much different from say, Bryan.

You know, I saw an 8-story building outside of downtown but I didn't get a photo-- you can see it here on streetview: http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=2...PNQ6htaX1_3VARdsA&cbp=11,328.79,,0,-1.41

I was underwhelmed by the buildings at TLU though.

Some dandy looking older rascals there. Seem to be in pretty good shape too. Hope the downtown area keeps active enough to maintain the old gems. Thanks for the tour.

How is the Caterpillar plant coming along ?

Seguin does have some nice building stock for its size (and some really nice old houses), but for whatever reason, there seems to be a bit of an
"east-of-I-35" stigma to towns like Seguin and Luling.
I visited Starcke Park in Seguin last year, which was fairly nice.

It's the Hill Country prejudice. Everything west of I-35 gets all the Hill Country tourism and prestige, and small towns that are otherwise quite charming but don't fall in the tourist zone are ignored.

Hmm. I've never seen that one. Of course we always come in on Texas 123 and go around Seguin. Looks residential. Maybe senior living? We've gone through town a few times. Of course usually when we do it's after dark, sometimes even in the wee hours of the morning, so everything's quiet.
