I think he would build the SE LRT very efficiently (no at grade crossings etc.) but all the stations would be very plain, and the cars would probably be just white, no colour.

Let's put this in perspective.

Though I don't like his ideology, its not like he is the leader of a party who can force his party cohorts to vote a certain way. He is one vote on City council and really that's about it.

This being Calgary, I assume some progressive Candidate will come out. I just hope whomever it is, that they have enough moxie to challenge Doctor No on the issues and we really get to see if McIvor has any VISION for the future of Calgary.

Really, will you folks just finally admit the majority of people are angry over the ped bridges? No matter how warranted or unwarranted? Regardless if the media did an H1N1-type scare job, lashing out at the bridges in every article? Snow removal and that bridge would have been centerpieces of the election, I think Bronco smelled the public's general feeling on these issues.

One extreme to the other with Al Duerrnothing to Digger Dave! We need some balance which means the nut bar Alderman like Pinicott and Farrel need to get tossed but SO DO THE city big wigs that are trying to turn this prairie city into downtown London.

We want to drive, we want some green space not a rats nest of people downtown and the rest of us stuffed like sardines on a Tokyo style c-train becasue we would have to pay more than downtown Manhattan to park!!!!

Is Paul trolling, or are there average Calgarians who believe this sort of shit? Like seriously? I'm no huge Bronco fan, but seriously..... Paul, come on, I think we all see the need for LRT. Imagine putting those tens of thousands back on the roads in cars and on some buses if you had no LRT, it would be MADNESS!

Actually, Joe Ceci is my Alderman and from my limited interaction with him, he is fairly middle of the road, and not even urban enough for my taste, which says something right there.

Clearly Druh Farrell is the most strident urbanist on council. Ceci seems like a reasonable and pragmatic alderman to me.

Farrell and Ceci are probably the two candidates that vote in favour of the most fiscally irresponsible items, Bronco saying "don't vote for Mr.No" is akin to saying spend spend spend. I don't mind higher density but it needs to be done reasonably, spend the money wisely - we learned its hard to come by and precious...look at how crippling the budget cuts have been

I have always felt that the pedestrian bridges and snow removal have become larger-than-life issues in this city. We'll never know if Bronconnier is stepping aside strictly because of the frenzy raised about them - after 9 years, maybe he just wants/needs a change. I can also see the flipside: a vote based on misinformation is a vote nonetheless, and no matter how much one does in other areas, people get hung up on certain things that become major election issues.

It is kind of sad, however, that the public can be swayed so easily on a couple of hot-button topics. I have said it before, but I really feel like much of the general public is genuinely discontent with city council, and that Bronconnier had his work cut out if he ran again. My big problem is that this discontent seems to be based largely on misinformation and media hype. In a forum such as this, regardless of political leanings, there is a desire to find out the facts and look beyond the headlines. Which is probably why we find pseudo-journalists like Rick Bell so frustrating.

I think that many people will find that, even with a new mayor, there will still be snowstorms and they'll still find something new to complain about. That's just human nature.
