This does not really impact the overall plans. The City did not expect to get funds in this round. The good news is that much of the legwork has been done and the City has a very strong case for the next round. Any thoughts that we would get funded now were optimistic. We have to realize that we have an incredible mass transit system for a City of our size and have been fortunate to get the amount of federal funding that we have received so far. More will come.

Every project is a wish list project until it is funded.

Agreed Cololi, and I think that if anyone can squeeze funds out of his many friends in Washington, Mayor Becker can. I am a fiscal conservative, but this is definately a very worthy project.
Also, it just occured to me that no one has said anything lately about the Oddfellows project. Anyone know of anything happening there on it's new pad?

It would be devastating to lose all these buildings, but I could see this configuration working:




I would hope, if this were the configuration chosen, that some care would be taken to preserve both the terra-cotta facade of the Newspaper Agency building, and the skylight, mosaic, and as many of the intricate moldings as possible in the MUAH building, and then somehow incorporate them into the new theater. The glass tower obviously does not need to be located on this corner; I'd prefer to see it built on State street, mid block between 100 and 200 South. This is without the glass Tower:




This could also work; it would require an alley where Braza Express is currently located (maybe Braza could move to CCC's food court?), but requires less demolition and some reuse:

Definitely a disappoinment about the Sugar House streetcar. I'm glad that city administration is not giving up on it. It's a good idea with solid research accomplished that proves it.

I live in the Libery Park neighborhood and I had always envisioned a streetcar line along 900 South from 900 West to 900 East. Linking the west side with the east side. Allowing people to access the main TRAX line. I suggested it to my councilman and he mentioned that city leaders have definitely mentioned 900 South and 500 east as future streetcar lines. Obviously, financing is the biggest obstacle.

Yeah, how great would that be, UTPlanner. I'm bummed too. I'm glad the city is sticking with the idea, and I'm sure it will be a reality eventually, but I was really hoping they'd land this incentive so that it could be completed by 2012.

I to would prefer to see the glass tower on State, it will widen the skyline and stretch the city another block.

I'm not a big fan of creating an alley, or loading access of Main (Braza) but I do like the idea of creating a pedestrian connection from Main to Regent further up, as UB has shown. I like your second version the best, keeping the MUAH building.

I'm confused about what you mean by the second option; you mentioned that it included the MUAH building. However, in the second option, the MUAH building has been demolished. The third option is the only way I've been able to preserve the MUAH building.

Opps, I just looked at the second image with the MUAH as part of the lobby, didn't process that it would be razed to build it. I like keeping the MUAH, but I also like the idea of the pedestrian connector at the north end, near the theater. So if there is some sort of option along those lines that would be great.

Does anyone know what business use those massive parking garages on Regent street? I think nothing would spruce up that part of the city like taking those concrete eyesores down- or at least out of sight. I hate how Orpheum Ave (a cool mid block street) courses below that ugly sucker.

I know a lot of people that work Key Tower, Chase building park there, along with the D News. The NAC employees used to park there, but obviously no longer. There isn't nearly as much demand for the garage as there used to be. If the new tower in UB's layout was built that would be a good place to park. I agree that the garage could come down, but I also think that with a little face lift it would be all that bad.

UB could you put a pedestrian path from Main to Regent, just south of the yellow building?

After purchasing the Main Street property earlier this year, the city's Redevelopment Agency is weighing its short-term options for the project: Open up the space to retailers or demolish much of the shuttered theater.

"I'm beginning to learn, when you get around these old buildings, it doesn't matter what you pay for them, you're fixing them up and retrofitting them, and you're going to spend a lot of money," said Councilman Van Turner, who frequented the theater in its heyday. "In today's economic climate, I think we need to get money from the county and the state to make that into the grand theater we're looking at. That's not going to happen this year."...
