That is more than the combined total ridership of all the light rail systems that have been opened in North America in the last year and greater than the weekly ridership for the Seattle LRT.

Sweet Jesus, and that was just people going to and from the torch relay. Let's see what it is today. They had pictures of the streets on TV just a minute ago and the roads are deserted of cars. Everyone must be taking transit to the Opening Ceremony.

So now we know C-Line CAN handle peak crowds.
Let's order more cars (or the C Cars) now so they arrive in 3 years just when we'll be needing them.
(instead of waiting to order them until there are crushing crowds from 8 AM to 8 PM, and then wait another 3 years for the cars to arrive)

I somehow think that it will break 200,000/day on some days. Depending on what events might be going on and who is going where. Also it would depend on how the tourists travel.

I'm actually curious to know what numbers the expo and mil line are doing.

Today I got on at VCC-Clark got my seat as it is a dead station . Train (new MKII) pulls into Commericial and wham it was shoulder to shoulder.

Tonight coming home got off at commerical at midnight and there must have been about 50-70 people waiting for the 99.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but a large number of the US buses are breaking down going up to Cypress...contractor has apparently been dropped or forced to replace most of the buses with newer ones.

To me the most impressive part of the special Translink services are WCE:

"WEST COAST EXPRESS begins additional service as of Friday, February 12th: on top of the westbound departures from Mission City at 5:27, 5:57, 6:27, 6:57 and 7:27am, there'll be one more at 2:00pm. Regular eastbound departures leave Waterfront at 3:50, 4:20, 4:50, 5:30 and 6:20pm, with two more late at night: 11:00pm and 12:15am. Beginning Monday, February 15th there'll be more extra trips during the week." From translink.bc.ca

I wish they were able to run special trains all the time, but we know about the contract locked in to 2014. I wonder how they managed to add these Olympic trains!

Easy they basically just asked the port and rail companies if they could cancel a few trips for the next 3 weeks.

It isn't like this is going to be on going. So what if someone in Chicago doesn't get is their new HD TV on time

I'm not sure if the governments here, provincial or local, have the foresight or intelligence to do that !!

Or the money. Actually, if they had money... I'm sure the foresight and intelligence would magically come to them.

Ken Hardie: "Canada Line increased the number of trains in service from the planned 16 to 18 to handle the crowds. "

Ken Hardie, 2 hours later: Canada Line is keeping its service level at the original Olympics plan of 16 trains.^R

why would they do that? go back to 16 trains when they have waits at all of the main stations? what are they trying to accomplish here?

Make as much profit as possible.

Other than the wear & tear costs of running the extra trains, do they really have any other extra costs? Is nightly maintenance and cleaning that much more expensive to do for 18 or 20 trains vs. the regular 16 trains?

The trains don't require an operator at regular or overtime rates; the stations need the same level of personnel for crowd control regardless of number of trains.

I'm not clear on why running more trains at peak time is so expensive, nor why they have to make these add trains / remove trains drop adjustments every few hours during the day. If there are lineups, keep running the trains at 18 or 20 train service until the lineups are cleared.

Doesn't the extra 30, 40, or 50,000 fares cover the extra costs of running longer rush-hour level of service during the olympics?

Just back from downtown, and C-Line Waterfront was running dual-platform operations.

It's the only time I remember using a train leaving the east platform, other than the free preview day in August.
