I talked to members of the Japanese media after the ceremony. They said they LOVE Vancouver

And the ceremony.

Coincidentally I was sitting in like, Japan-ville, and when Japan was announced a couple of dozen people jumped up and started waving their flags and paper fans.

Including me. Minus the flag and fans.

I guess the Germans aren't used to non brick walls between units

Ski jumping trainer Werner Schuster compared the Olympic Village with a boy scout camp. The 41-year-old said: “The living standard is very poor. Five, six people have to share a bathroom and the walls are as thin as curtains.”

The size the accommodation has also been criticised. A particularly sore point is that there isn’t enough space for athletes to dry their clothes.

A German functionary said: “The Village is good for summer. But now in winter with this weather it’s a problem.

"The German team have especially bought heaters to dry their things which are always getting wet due to the relentless sleet.”

Hermann Weinbuch, Germany's Nordic combined coach, also slammed the fact that athletes and support staff will have to live so far apart.

And having to eat with plastic cutlery off paper plates in the Olympic Village hasn't gone down well with the 49-year-old either (Security related I'm guessing)

But despite the problems, most of the Olympic Village residents seem to have come to terms with the inconveniences.

Schuster added: “I think it is enriching for the athletes to experience this. There’s a different atmosphere in a four-star hotel because you have to adjust to the circumstances.”

but if they are like any recent condos in the city size and noise is a problem

VANOC's using paper plates and plastic cutlery? I thought this was supposed to be the "greenest games ever"?

It's not plastic plastic. It's that coarse recycled plastic. It's very common.

The first gold medal has been awarded. Mens normal hill ski jumping, Simon Ammann from Switzerland, with a distance of 108m.

The cutlary is for security reasons...the same reason why they don't give you metal utensils on airplanes even in first class.

Yes, that was insane....they almost had to redo the final round because skiers were getting dangerously close to the end of the jump where it flattens out.

Actually, they do. And glass cups. Never been on an airline that didn't.

Terrorists can't afford first class!

Anyways, the athletes probably need this because the kitchens don't have any appliances. Like dishwashers.

And you don't expect Sidney Crosby to wash dishes BY HAND?!

when i was in first class we got metal utensils excpet for the knife it was plastic

Wow, they allow metal utensils now? I know after Sept 11 they stopped using them. Kind of defeats the purpose of not allowing sharp objects through security when you already have them on board...

Btw, the EIU once again announced Vancouver to be teh best and safest place to live in the world...I don't have an English press release but I'm sure you can find it online somewhere.

Airport security is largely symbolic. The crew kit has a sharp axe that is capable of chopping through the fuselage if need be.

But, yet, they have to go through security before boarding.
