Chris Shaw strikes in Time magazine:

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1963439,00.html?xid=feed-yahoo-full-world-related

He's just a simple man, with simple tastes, and the only one quoted in the article. He speaks for all of Vancouver, like we always hope he will.

Besides, were you aware the Olympics caused the down east situation even though it pre-dates the event by a few decades? That's certainly the implication, and a sly little twist . . . I give him an extra tenth of a point for that last-minute rotation .

As for the awkward factor, what is it with the placement of "Watch a video on how ski jumpers train?" doing at the end of that serious sounding paragraph. It's like reading an article about a car-jacking that includes a special link to a video about the secrets of making great coffee-cake .

Wow, to think that actually made Time Magazine. Yikes. Was he really the best middle man they could find?

BTW, has it always been practice for the police to be out with cameras recording the protesters? I think this is actually quite smart. They showed them recording everything the Insite protesters were doing. Of course, this could be in response to the protesters asking everyone to record the police. When something happens, undoubtedly having the unedited police footage will be nice. Even if the news organizations will probably take the protesters footage, over it

Cuz it takes a lot to make Chris Shaw himself look normal.

LOL, it must have been the blood-splattered panda.

I thought the pic was that of anti-olympics protest, and the panda was some sort of 'evil Miga'...

Was just at the VAG. Completely quiet, and there are trucks parked on the front.

Are they just gonna converge outta nowhere? Quite a big lineup for the ticket office, wrapped all the way up the stairs to Robson St. Decided not to go

I think the protest is tomorrow, Yume, if that's what you were referencing.

I swear there was one scheduled for today, too!

I can't be too wrong, there are usually several everyday.

Go to BC Place instead, there is a temporary ticket office setup under the Cambie St. Bridge. You can get all of the same tickets there, without a lineup. (But go today or Saturday, not tomorrow!)

There's also been a ton of (comparatively) low-key scalpers in the International Village area. They whisper "want tickets?" in the same revered tone usually retained for "weed/hash?".

Meeting the torch at those areas. If today's run so far is any indication, they will be far outnumbered by supporters.

I had a funny feeling going to the Canada Post today. Some guys got out of car and started "working" the sidewalk. I think they parked in the parking spaces there at the post office, though I'm not sure. They started kind of asking random people, me included, if we had tickets to sell (not to buy, but to sell).

I just said "no" and walked on, kind of wondering if that was really their best approach. But then it kind of bugged me. My first vibe hadn't felt right. And I noticed in my brief interaction that one guy seem to be directing the others, like telling them where to go . . . sending one over to library square. But it didn't really strike me as a group of buds hanging out together and hoping to spring for some tickets. It seemed more "organized," even kind of subversive in a way.

Just struck me as strange when I thought about it more. I even wondered about a show I saw recently explaining how professional scammers work the streets. The schemes can be quite elaborate at times. And it normally starts with something that seems good . . . a stranger "helping you out" right after something bad (caused by their partner) happens or, say, an opportunity to make some easy money.

Anyhow, it just gave me a weird vibe when I thought about it a block or so after the encounter. It may have been nothing, but still. My instincts have been right on things before that seemed askew at the time.

I do think we are going to have a different mix mingling around for the next few weeks. Maybe most will be wide-out, or well-off , tourists. But some may be out to scam and pickpocket and otherwise mess with the masses. There may be some taking advantage of the easy-going manner we're used to experiencing.

Sorry, can't leave these clowns alone:

Quote:
An anti-Olympics protester alleges she was punched in the eye by an Olympics supporter at Langara College on Thursday afternoon.

Elizabeth McIntyre, a second-year arts and science student at Langara, was one of the roughly 20 people rallying against the school’s support of the Games. During a ceremony in front of the campus library, she became engaged in a heated war of words with another woman in the crowd.

“This girl singled me out and told me I had no right to be there,” said McIntyre. “I let her know that there was no reason I couldn’t be there, and that really made her mad.”

After some more yelling, McIntyre poured some of her water over the woman’s head, prompting the woman to allegedly strike McIntyre on the left eye.

Emma Gregory, another one of the protesters, said the rally was non-violent and the attack on her friend was uncalled for.

“We were chanting and we had some signs but that was all,” Gregory said. “We did not provoke that.”

Chris Gordon, Langara Students’ Union spokesperson, is urging the college to investigate and punish whoever is responsible.

None of the Olympics supporters involved wanted to comment.

Did not provoke? Uncalled for? Whaaaaaaaat? Two wrongs don't make a right, but — are these people thinking, really?

Somebody empties a bottle of anything on me, unless I'm alone vs. a crowd, they are getting something in return.

If someone poured water on my head, I would probably strike back as well. Afterall, the act of throwing liquid at someone IS a physical assault in itself.

Here come the protests, on TV! This is getting good. It's better than reality TV.

Oh no there's like 100 of them blocking the street! The torch has been re-routed off Hastings.

Tens of thousands of supporters, maybe less than 100 protesters. Kind of wish they'd just go through them, they'll feel as if they won by re-routing.

Isn't this kind of the MO for these protesters? Do what they can to provoke a response and then scream — murder.

I'm sure we'll be seeing this tactic played out a lot over the next few weeks.

Protesters are blocking the route at W Hastings and Cambie. CTV is saying that the torch is being re-routed. It's all being covered live right now

Is it wrong of me to be surprised that a few dozen of them actually got up so early?
