He was the one that created the "$6-7 billion cost" figure for the Games a few months ago. And now, the media is catching on thinking that's the real cost...at this point, there's no stopping this half-truth.

I have a few questions and comments

(1) Is it legal for protestors to prevent people from entering an Olympic venue?

(2) Is it legal for protestors to block traffic?

If the answer is no, to the above, which I beleive is this case, then anyone engaging in such acts should be arrested. Why should protestors have the right to prevent me from exercising my freedoms?

(3) Isn't a permit required to have a march in the streets?

(4) I have no problem with protestors voicing their opinions as long as it doesn't infringe upon my rights to freedom, which include attending Olympic events, driving in the streets, taking public transit, etc.

If it is really true that protestors want to disrupt the Games, then it seems to me that the protestors want all the privileges of a free society, but are not willing to allow others to enjoy those same priviliges.

I believe that there should be a campaign by the general public to document extreme activities of protestors. If things get out of hand and the freedom of the general public is curtailed by protestors, then a lawsuit should be launched against them and their financial backers. People need to be held accountable for their actions.

You are the financial backer. Your tax dollars pay for their welfare checks, so that they can have time to do important things like this

That is probably the most offensive thing I have ever heard.
As for the protesters, well last time I checked this is a democracy and they have the right to protest as much as they like as long, obviously, as it does include/promote violence.
I never wanted the games. Vancouver is, byfar, Canada's most socially/economically stratified city yet the province find billions to build skating rink but mysteriously have no money for the homeless, drug addiction centres, hospitals, the disabled, elder care, or more post-secondary education.

For me and many like my whole family who run the gammit of wealthy to retired to disabled NONE of us every wanted these games. This is a province with a low standard of living compared to the rest of the country mostly due to housing prices and the nation's lowest minimum wage. It's just that there were and are so many pressing issues in this province and everything was put aside for the last 8 years because of the a 3 week circus.

We are going to be paying for these games for decades to come and everyone {especially the province and VANOC know it}. A mickey-mouse transit line that hs shorter stations than what what they were suppose to be but still came in $800,000,000 over budget. The $1,000,000 per one bedroom apt to house our honoured guests. They were suppose to come in at $240,000/piece with 30% for social housing. Now its down to 10% social housing and will be sold at $500,000 a piece {for offshore investors} and hence the tax payers are going to be subsidizing each precious condo for $500,000 a piece. Its made even more obscene becuase we have lost a lot of the promised social housing while HUNDREDS are losing their apts and SRO for "upgrades" which the province has been allowing. I find it inhumane that a province is far more intereted in putting roofs over skating rinks than people's head's.
It has left the city with a $170,000,000 debt and the city may {and the mayor has said probably} result in the city declaring official bankruptsy. The quadrupling of the security budget because the province took a number out of a hat and knew they were lying thru their teeth.
What about all these little "unexpected" bills that we will be paying back because they "underestimated" the costs.

The developers, construction companies, and inside friends of VANOC have done exceptionally well. I hope to hell that no one on this thread is stupid enough to think that there hasn't been a lot of palm's greased over all the devlopement, land transactions, and construction contracts.

Now that they are here I truley hope the games are a success and I think they will be thanks to all the dedicated volunteers but in 4 short weeks the games will be over, the press will have left and BC will still have even more of the problems she had before the Olympics. Now, however, the province will tell the populas that things are tough in the world economy, we are exporting less , etc, etc so we are all going to have to "tighten our belts" which means fewer services and higher taxes ie...PST/GST combo which he announced only 3 weeks after winning the last election.

Really? You must not get out much.

I didn't bother to read the rest of your rant, because, I didn't want to offend you off the deep end when I call you on your BS after.

And who says I don't care? I do have a feeling other people won't be quite as gracious, so you may want to cover your eyes.

looks like the HST is going to bring in less revenue for the province than the PST... so it may in fact be saving you money

Then it's a good thing we didn't finish Evergreen, Gateway and the new roof on BC Place or the Olympics would have cost $12B. By that logic, Gordo saved us $5B! He's a hero!

Did he really just say that our Canada Line was $800,000,000 over budget? Is he out of his addled brain?

In a nutshell, I'd have to say "that is probably the most addle-pated rant I've read in quite some time".

Nothin' says lovin' like "facts" pulled out of thin air.

wow...not surprisingly from you, most of that was B.S.

1) Nobody here would have problems with protesters if it they weren't disruptive nor violent.

2) You want social/economic problems? Go to Africa.

3) Think again: If it weren't for the Games, hundreds of millions wouldn't have been spent on social housing, shelters....but hey, it's never enough for you folks!

4) With changing demographics and a changing population in the interior, there's a reason why schools are being downsized...enrollment is simply much smaller.

5) Mickey mouse transit line...I'd agree. But then right after that, you complained that it went $800-million overbudget? Quality costs money, which you seem to want but don't want to pay for it - and prevailing attitudes like this is why we ended up with what we have for the Canada Line.

And no, it wasn't $800-million overbudget. The initial "$1.2-billion" budget was made 5-years before construction started, and 3.5-years before SNC-Lavalin and Bombardier created a detailed design... and SNC-Lavalin was chosen. SNC-Lavalin's budget was $1.74-billion...it came to $2-billion; an overrun of that margin is acceptable with rising construction costs.

6) The Olympic Village is a long-term investment...it's not as if not a single more suite will sell. You'll take back what you said in 3 years.

7) How's life?

Wow...talk about media sensationalism. I have never seen so many factual errors in one newscast. Both by the idiot reporter and anchor woman:

Video Link

Because of these Games, there are 3,000 homeless in our city? The Games cost $6-billion? jesus christ.

Thanks to our local media spouting half-truths, the world thinks they are true and it's being broadcasted around the world. Great job Canwest! Great job CBC! You did us proud...
