I believe that the enviro depot reference pertains to the old Metropolitan Store on the East side of gottingen St. It was full of junk and the roof was falling in. Good to get rid of. Next door to the Hfx Backpackers I think. JET

I just heard there is a proposal to connect the existing WTCC with the Metro Centre with a 20 storey tower, anyone hear about this?

That's the pre-qualification tender for the new WTCC. That website managed to mangle the wording pretty badly.

An article today in allnovascotia.com states that Danny Chedrawe is preparing plans for a residential building on the triangle-shaped piece of land next to Citadel Hill and the Centennial Pool, near the intersection of Cogswell and Rainnie. You may recall this was once the site of a Legion and when they shut down it was bought originally by Amalthea. They had drawings of a proposal for the site but they got into financial trouble and it was never built. Chedrawe bought the property from them. The article says that under HRM by Design the site allows a 5 or 6 storey residential development and that is what he is proposing -- presumably condos.

Interesting location if you like being surrounded by fields...

I hope it is brick and the flatiron style in the old rendering.

Yep, that's where the dog park (for disabled owners) is located. The dog park is at the corner, and there is a parking lot next to the swimming centre. Doesn't seem like a great spot to build. JET

Here's a photo of the sign for the old development that I took a while ago (says 2005, but I'm not sure that date is correct):



I was never thrilled by the design but, well, it sounds fine as a project. People complained that the old one was too tall at 9 storeys. My main concerns are how the new building addresses the corner, how it looks from the Citadel, and how it fits in with the houses on Cogswell. It would be easy to do better than that rendering above.

It would also be nice if some work went into the ugly vinyl-clad houses at the corner of North Park (either a lot of renovations or a wrecking ball). I guess they are just neglected low-end rentals.

Just to clarify what's desired for the area according to HbD;

pre-bonus height: 16m
post bonus height: 18.2m
Streetwall height: 15.5m
Building Setback: 0-4.0m (varying)
PP site: listed as potential plaza site.

It lists Rainie Drive as an esplanade and Cogswell as a Civic Avenue.

A minimum of five squared metres of landscaped open area provided per resident of building (2.25 X # of units).

60% (max) of landscaped open area can be transferred to rooftop provided the rooftop is contiguous at least 56 squared metres in area and is fully accessible to all residents of the building.

I think HRM by design addresses this entire triangular block for development, so approval may be easier now. I remember there were issues regarding zoning, i think it was called "institutional".

Apparently the Agricola Street NSLC is up for redevelopment. There isn't much to go on but the site is going to have a new mixed use building on it with north-side parking and south-side pedestrian only walkway with a cafe included. All of the information I have to go on is Councillor Sloane's Webpage.

A P.I.M. is going to be held on Thursday (February 11th) at 7:00pm at FRED (corner of North and Agricola).

two other rumours to come out this past week was a 5 storey to 10 storey addition to Young Tower on Young Street.

The building will provide office space.

Bayers road centre annouced it is considering adding another 5 storey tower above the existing mall near the tim hortons. Again this would add more commercial space.

and the progress of suburban developments out pace the downtown.

This looks interesting. In the PIM poster it shows a public pedestrian? street being added, connecting Agricola to Maynard. Unfortunately, preliminary plans are by Kassner/Goodspeed - hopefully it's more interesting than anything they've done in the past. Still, the redevelopment of this site will be great for Agricola and the surrounding area.

Is that addition to Young Tower a second tower or an upwards extension?

I had heard they were putting another glass building like the one recently built at the other end of the "L", then eventually put a 9 or more floor building at the center part of the "L". At one time they were talking about another building in the parking lot, same as the one already there, but I think the two extensions replaced that idea.
