many years ago they also floated the idea of building a Super Wall Mart in this location.

Nearly all of Maple Ridge's current development is in the eastern half of the municipality, and people have been pushing for shopping centres east of the town centre for a long time.

I personally think it should be reserved as farmland, but if I had to choose between Walmart and Ikea, I would choose Ikea, i think it will bring in more people from out of town than a Walmart.

Ironically this location is very close to the now discontinued ferries, so coming from other areas south of the river to this location is arguably more difficult now than before the opening of the bridge.

seems small no? that's just under 100,000 sq ft.......

and from the web I see

"IKEA Canada has 11 stores, each with an operating area of 200000+ sq. feet,"

and

"Coquitlam, BC. Completed ... site with frontage to both Lougheed Highway and the Trans Canada Highway is home to Ikea's new 340000 sq ft concept store. .."


so this sounds like it could be either

a) a warehouse

b) a smaller format store.....but the location is odd for a store at all IMO. but a smaller format would work there I think.

I'm a little perplexed by it as well, as Ikea has had a long standing policy of needing 1Million residents to sustain a store, we now have two stores and it's a long time until we get to 3M. I don't see there being a 1M client base within that catchment area either. Perhaps there is some confusion in the info, since this has been on hold since 2006 it might have been taken care of by the Coq store and the new info is meant to relate to the Richmond renos. Either way I'll keep my ears open for any new info. I am still surprised of the proposal as I had never heard of it. The small size might also refer to the proposed upsizing of the Richmond store.

I suppose it could draw shoppers over the Golden Ears Bridge from Surrey, but you'd think that Langley/Surrey would be a better location. With the Highway 1 project and Pitt River Bridge, you'd think that the Coquitlam store would be reasonably accessible from Maple Ridge (i.e. just as far away as Vancouver).

I would think Langley would be best - drawing from Abbotsford/Chilliwack as well as Surrey (no need to cross the river).

That is a bit of a strange location. I would have expected to see them locate in Langley to be a bit more central and closer to White Rock, Surrey, and Abbotsford (more or less).

With the #7 highway upgrade occurring between Maple Ridge and Mission currently and over the next few years, the location could still be a decent draw for those living in Abbotsford and of course Mission.

I think that Ikea has lowered the million people requirement. Winnipeg is getting one and they have under 700,000. That means we could have three... but Maple Ridge???? We need one DT, IMO, but I'm sure that Ikea has studied this well.

before they chose Coqutilam there was talk it would open in Langley near hwy #1 and 200th but they ended up in cotuilam - good choice

Wal-Mart Canada has announced plans to open up to 40 new superstores across Canada, and city hall confirms one of the proposed locations is in Richmond.

Wal-Mart Wednesday announced it will open 35 to 40 supercentres this year across Canada.

Coun. Bill McNulty, who chairs the city's planning committee, said the city's planning department has received an application from the big box giant for a 100,000-foot store at the corner of Alderbridge Way and Garden City Road.

Wal-Mart has owned the parcel of land for several years. The land is already zoned for retail operations, so a public hearing may not be required, although McNulty said it's possible city council will ask for one anyway.

"We might ship it to public hearing," McNulty said. "I think we would want community input. They don't require it, but we can ask them to do it. I think it's always good to communicate with the public."

The supercentres Wal-Mart is proposing to either build or create through expansions combine regular supermarkets with other retail operations.

"I haven't seen any of it so I can't comment too much on what they propose," McNulty said.

Some city councillors have said in the past that Alderbridge Way and Garden City Road is too close to the city centre for a big box store.

"Obviously the design is critical, that we have a proper design, that it fits in nicely to the community, it's environmentally green as possible," McNulty said.

Coun. Evelina Halsey-Brandt, the city's former planning committee chairperson, said any business that wants to create jobs and taxes is welcome in Richmond, but not if it means plunking a standard big box store near the city centre.

"In my opinion, Wal-Mart is welcome in Richmond but it would have to be a really specific, designed-for-Richmond store," Halsey-Brandt said. "It's not going to be a cookie-cutter."

She said she would not support a big box design that has acres of outdoor parking.

"It is not going to be a single-level store," she said. "Anything will have to be a multi-level to accommodate minimal area surface parking."

McNulty also said he doesn't want to see a plain big box store in the area. He said the Wal-Mart site would also need to support other services such as doctors offices, dentists offices, (a pharmacy) to create a central hub for people in that area.

McNulty said he expects the Wal-Mart application to come to the planning committee sometime in the next month.

Multi-level project - surface parking hidden under second storey store with ground floor retail along mid-block street. Not much retail (if any) along Alderbridge Way (I suppose the viability of retail there would depend on the use of the Garden City Lands across the street).

anyone have any details about what is going on with ikea in richmond? are they expanding/relocating? i saw development application signs outside the property but couldn't read them as i was driving by.

I've heard two conflicting stories so no idea which one is valid. One involves an expansion and reconfiguration of access point to the building. The other states they have no current plans on proceeding with any changes.
