Northport Clears Way For 16.9 acre Development along the Black Warrior

The Northport Redevelopment Authority (didn't know one existed...) has cleared the way for a 16.9 acre development just outside of downtown Northport, along the Black Warrior River.

The $70 Million development would include a 200 room hotel, 65 unit multifamily complex that could be used as condos or apartments, as well as a single family residential neighborhood. There are also plans to incorporate the wetlands in this area into a park area, and would use the historic 1882 bridge that spanned the river (how?).

I'm confused as to which bridge they're talking about. I'm doing some research and maybe it's this one? Yea, I'm pretty sure it's that one. Judging by this article from 2009, it was restored and the city intends to use it for something like this development.

The article goes on to say that it could be a year or more before everything really moves forth.

They are starting to clear up University, north of the Federal building. Man...I could do some damage on that enormous dirt pile.

That a little bit of a let down compared to what was developed in the Northport Downtown Plan.

It seems like we've been waiting on that thing forever! Maybe I've just not heard of it, but have the developers made any prediction on when they might start construction?

Not that I've seen, but their web site mentions that they took out an ad in the BCS national championship program,so they are still actively marketing it :

The Tuscaloosa city council will consider zoning for the amended
Riverwalk Place. Some people in the neighborhood oppose the development.
Anyway, someone e-mailed me the renderings that will be shown to the council:

Also, Northport is considering approval for a Hampton Inn on its riverfront, and I noticed a sign on the UA Strip for a condo development called Kensington (where the "University Station" development was planned years ago) that will have a Smoothie King on the ground floor. The picture on the sign looked like maybe 3 stories.

Hotel planned for Northport riverfront

The gin property on the same as the property mentioned above. This land is east of rail trestle, at the end of Main Avenue in Northport.

Riverwalk Place Gets Final Approval!

The Tuscaloosa City Council has given final approval to the Riverwalk Place development along the Black Warrior River, after five years.

Located along Jack Warner Parkway the project will have a three story building with retail on the first floor and apartments/condos on the top two. The rest of the details aren't very clear, but I'm assuming that more details will emerge later on.

If anyone has a more clear explanation of the plans, please say so.

Yeah, I watched the city council meeting last night, and the final version of Riverwalk Place looks a lot like the rendering I posted, minus the restaurant building in the middle, which was replaced by just open space.

The Riverwalk itself would be on city easement and will connect to "Riverwalk Phase III" (Corps of Engineers' property). The city is waiting on ALDOT (probably 3 or 4 months to get started) to release money that has already been appropriated to start building that section of the path.

There's not much to photograph at this point. The old East Engineering Building has been completely demolished and now site work is on-going.

I predict that the new Science Quad in between these new science and engineering buildings will be a great new location for tailgating at UA, especially after the completion of the fourth and final phase.

Some sort of construction is going at the old Queen City Pool, by the library. They have equipment set up and have putting a fence up around the property. Is this related to the transportation museum?

I spent some time in Tuscaloosa on Monday at the construction sites downtown. I knew there were a few projects going on, obviously reading this message board, but had no idea of the scope of the work going on there. Downtown Tuscaloosa is really getting some great improvements once they make it through the growing pains of construction.

It sounds like it. It's about time they started work on it, it seems like it's been forever since they first proposed it.

Although not necessarily "urban" in nature, I noticed a huge clearing in Northport (along US 43, a few blocks north of Northport City Hall).
I asked some of my relatives who live nearby, and they said that the site is 90 acres and used to belong to the Harper family, and that a large shopping center is going in there.
