I think Surrey's poor image had nothing to do with the crime. Its image was considered to be more of a joke. Whether warranted or not. It got the image of being the trailer trash region. Not saying it is still true. But there used to countless surrey jokes. Just like there are countless blond jokes (nothing against blondes). Over time the jokes take on a meaning of their own and people who don't know the area start to believe it.

evry city picks on one area

like toronto picks on scarborough or missisauga - portland picks on gresham - new yorkers pick on new jersey

Our friends at rail for the valley seem to think barricades are more important than fare gates.

No, Surrey earned that reputation. Come on guys, there are hookers on KG, and I think we are pretty quick to forget the "Surrey 6" gang killings.

I agree Surrey is improving, but it is going through some big time growing pains.

Can someone change the name of this thread, please? It doesn't seem to be about Metro Vancouver Transit anymore.

I think they mean "Vending Machines" as opposed to "Faresaver Vendors"

Airport to get additional ticket vendors

RICHMOND/CKNW(AM980)

1/27/2010

Translink says it will probably install one or two extra ticket machines at the airport Canada Line Station to deal with the influx of Olympic visitors.

Translink's Ken Hardie says most people using Skytrain have a pass, transfer or pre-paid ticket, "However, for those wanting or needing to buy tickets, the queue management at those stations will allow for a very orderly access to the stations. So people will have time to stop by the machines (and) pick up their tickets before they board the train."

Some Skytrain stations have just three ticket machines.

Truth be told they could use *several* more ticket machines at YVR. They are always lined up.

From my notes takes during several trips in August:

put more YVR station ticket machines into “The Link” building 4th floor so tickets are purchased there before using the pedestrian causeway to get to the C-Line train platform. There’s a lot more room there to let people bunch up while purchasing tickets. You can also space out the machines, so a frazzled & jet-lagged family (with their luggage and reception committee) crowding around one machine while figuring how many fare zones they need to pay for & how many tickets to get, doesn’t block the next machine with it’s own stressed out family surrounding it.

More ticket machines should be on the mezzanine below the YVR station platform where the International terminal pedestrian causeway connects to the C-Line station. Or the ticket machines can be put inside the international terminal so customers can get to them before crossing the pedestrian causeway to get to the C-Line mezzanine.

I think we should do what Montreal did to discourage jumpers, point out the fact that it's not instant or painless. Montreal found that only 1 in 3 people who jumped infront of the Metro died, most people suffered either really long and painful recoveries, or had agonizingly slow deaths.

Get the word out there that it's super painful and not guaranteed and we'll probably see fewer people jumping.

Whooppeee....one more fare machine at one of the busiest stations on the line!

One can only hope they'll have the foresight for the number of fare gates required for each station...

Translation: Now we're soaking airport travellors for $5 per trip, we need more machines to rake in the money faster.

I think they are adding one to Yaletown and Van Centre also.

^ not sure. Any game as GM place?

Friday is always the busiest for Canada Line in general. On a Friday two weeks ago I took the train back from Aberdeen centre just before 9pm (northbound) and didn't get a seat.

With 18 trains, I gotta wonder...what's the total daily load the Canada Line is able to carry?

You guys are a bunch of typical Skytrain lobbyists! Everyone knows that nobody rides the Skytrain. It's always empty.
