Of course all of this could change

I'm not talking about the current master plan that is being developed but many of the early conceptual plans that show a higher density development and more modern structures.

Huntsville Housing Authority on Thursday broke ground on a senior center alongside Huntsville Hospital, marking the first new construction as a result of the authority's plan to break up public housing downtown.

The three-story, $10 million building, to be called Gateway Place, will include 86 units for elderly residents of public housing

Approx 300 JF Drake students now attend classes downtown in the basement
of the art deco Times building. Maybe some student targeted retail/restaurants will follow in nearby available spaces. Across the street at
301 East Holmes would be perfect as well as the new parking deck to be constructed this spring also across from the Times building.

That website also has renderings of a new dorm facility at UAH. Maybe this is old news, but i haven't heard anything about it. It looks like a pretty nice building, anyway.

Believe these are the ones currently under construction (they have a crane!)next to the recently completed parking deck.

Hopefully one day we'll actually see Airtran 717s and 737s in the skies above HSV on a daily basis.

It would make all of us in Huntsville quite happy.

According to www.flightaware.com, it appears to be a diversion of their flight 307 from DEN to ATL. Based off the weather map around that time, I would say it was due to weather at ATL.

And I bet it was cheaper for those Airtran passangers to fly from DEN to ATL then it would be for United passangers to fly from DEN to HSV on smaller aircraft.

There were a total of 16 flights diverted to HSV due to the weather,
Several Delta 757's in the mix and on the ground here for 4 hours till the weather cleared. Passengers were allowed to go into the concourse for food
and restrooms.

Well i was driving down the parkway saturday night and was surprised to see this water tower. I'm not sure what factory it belongs to ....but if you are crossing over Governors and Bob Wallace headed south you look to the right. They had it lit and it changed colors every 15- 20 seconds or so. Nice little touch there I must say.

Hello all! This is my first time posting here. Please be patient as I learn what I am doing. I have been following this thread for years and have always enjoyed reading the comments. It is a new year and I finally decided to get in on the conversations.

Downtown Huntsville is starting out in 2010 with many exciting projects. Some of these have been discussed here and some have not.

Here is a list of downtown area projects all ready in progress…
1. Constellation- Still moving dirt around but now they have a construction
trailer on site which is a sure sign that construction is starting.
2. Von Braun Center- Construction is underway for the facelift to the exterior
arena area.
3. Huntsville Museum of Art- The ground work for this expansion is well
underway and looking good.
4. Court House Square- Upgrades to the sidewalks and landscaping in the
square area are somewhere around 75%-80% complete and it looks great.
5. Gateway Place- New senior housing had a ground breaking ceremony this
week.
6. Meridian Street widening project- This has been a major project a long
time in coming and much needed.
7. Jefferson Place- I only noticed yesterday that there is a sign at the fence
in from of the old Jefferson Furnicher store location on Jefferson Street
between the Koffee Klatch and the East Side Square. This is looking like
some type of condos. Maybe someone can give us details here.
8. Drake College (Times Building)- Basement completed with capacity for
300+ students to attend. This would definitely increase foot traffic in
that area. The first floor of 301 East Holmes Ave condos, which is
diagonal from the Times Building, would be a great place for a café or
restaurant of some type.
9. Huntsville Zoning Board- Rezoning plans to extend the official downtown
area by adding 182 acres to the existing 296 acres for a total of 478
acres. This will extend the downtown boundary all the way to Pratt on
the northern side. This will be a great thing because there are large
possibilities in that area up near the new Meridian Street widening project.

We are lucky to live in an area that has not been hit as hard by the economy as some citys. Maybe when things start moving again, downtown Huntsville will see more high rise construction.

This has been in the works for nearly 3 years

MONTGOMERY -- House Speaker Seth Hammett has committed to give first priority on Tuesday to a bill that would allow Huntsville to establish a special tax increment finance district for a $1 billion development at Redstone Arsenal.

Rep. Randy Hinshaw, D-Merdianville, the House sponsor of the legislation, said the bill will be the first one considered by the full House when it convenes Tuesday at 1 p.m.

A Senate committee has also approved the bill, but it's stacked behind other legislation because of a session-long delay in the upper chamber over a $1 billion highway bill. Republicans are using stalling tactics to prevent a vote on the bill.

If the bill wins approval, LW Redstone, (JW Wilson)a Montgomery company, would lease and develop 470 acres of unused property on Redstone Arsenal for offices, classrooms, research and conference space for federal workers and contractors.

The plan also call for two hotels with a total of 350 rooms, restaurants and stores.

In this case, LW Redstone has agreed to buy bonds directly and be repaid as the tax growth occurs.

The new development would ultimately include 4 million square feet of office space and employ about 14,000 people.

Airport work complete

The construction of the two wings along with the connectorway between the two totals more than 20,000 square feet – quadrupling the size of the former bridge that connected the terminal to the concourse. Numerous amenities are included in the new construction, including Paradies’ new gift shop, Explore Huntsville; new terminal restrooms, including a family restroom; new high-definition, plasma screen displays; and a 7-foot by 3-foot curved Clarity Matrix Video Wall System (jumbotron) – the first of its kind at an airport nationwide. In addition, the entire north wall of the new public waiting features a collage of historic photographs highlighting the past 200 years of Huntsville’s history. The wall, entitled “200 Years of Discovery,” depicts the earliest days of Huntsville’s first settler, John Hunt, and Big Spring through the future of space exploration with the development of Ares I. Also in the new public waiting area is a display by Redstone Arsenal. The state-of-the-art, interactive display highlights the phenomenal and critically important work that Team Redstone does to support our warfighters and defend our nation and represents over 55 federal organizations located on Redstone Arsenal .
