outside of the admittedly interesting main peninsula, one could be forgiven -- especially if not an outdoorsy type -- for finding vancouver's appeal elusive.

Hostility? I think you're being overly sensitive. Burrard Inlet hardly summarizes Vancouver. IMO, It was a poor choice in response to Cold's comment.

I love Vancouver's architecture. You'd almost mistake it for an Asian city.

I much prefer the squarely Canadian sections of Vancouver.

The pic is completely surrounded by Vancouver! city proper, downtown, north shore, ubc, etc...

Almost everything except what what was built on the Expo 86 grounds; so I like most of Vancouver.

Main St., Commercial Drive, West and East Broadway, West 4th and a lot of areas in East Vancouver are distinctly Vancouver. They offer a unique city experience that can't really be found outside of the city. It has more of the suburban/urban west coast feel to it. A different style than the east to be sure.

Areas in Port Moody, Richmond and New West also have a lot to offer.

C'mon, Kool, you need to give Vancouver another go. Let me know if you come again and I take you out.

I've lately suspected as much. I've only been to Vancouver once and to be honest didn't care for it greatly since I only spent time on the downtown peninsula (condos!). Since then I've had friends who'd informed me that is really not the place to be.

It's like those who dislike Toronto because all they see is central downtown and the suburbs.

fair enough, and you're not the first to say this... so i'll add that my impressions may be too narrowly-based and partial to count for much.

i lost a good friend to vancouver. he was a real man here in toronto -an engineer with a suit, clean shoes & suitcase type.
on a whim, he drove there with his lady. they soon split up, sold his car... joined a band or something. vanished from all good society. sends the occasional cryptic text msg. he just gave up on life. suicidal.

UUUUgggghhhh!

I am so tired of Canadians disliking or downright hating other regions or cities in our own country. When are we going to grow up? To outsiders it looks and sounds so "Small potatoes". It makes us look like the rubes the rest of the world already thinks we are.

After all, who would take a country seriously, if they can't even take each other seriously? Would you invest in a company where the accounting department openly disrespects the abilities of the CEO? Or buy a car from a manufacturer who's president publicly spurns the competence of his assembly-line workers?

Travel the world and you find in most civilized countries, smaller cities are proud of their largest or capital city. Large city dwellers speak highly of their regional counterparts. Even the Americans are more tolerant of each other than we are. Americans ALL love New York. They are proud of it and think of it as America's capital.

I wish we could get out of our self-loathing phase and finally embrace the status of world class country, we so richly deserve.

Good shot Harls, I like how Place du Portage blends into Ottawa's skyline from this angle.

^^ I'm pretty sure everyone here was kidding/being sarcastic/getting in on the joke. I think you'd actually be hard-pressed to find someone that couldn't find those shots of Van to be beautiful.

^exactly, er Bingo!

Vancouver is my second home who I love to hate but hate to hate.

It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and is finally 'becoming' something amazing. While I prefer the grit and grab of montreal or toronto any day of the week, Vancouver is hard to not embrace.

What I do hate about Vancouver is how many people there miss out on so much of it.

Commercial north of broadway is one of the coolest streets in Canada.
