I thought the units were pretty nice for a building built in the 1960's. Then again, this is coming from someone who lives in a crappy complex off S. Lamar.

The unit I was in was on the NW corner of the 15th floor. You can see it in the photo below. It's the two lighted windows just above that parking garage in the foreground.

Balconies were small but there were six of them in this unit. Two in the living/dining area faced west, the other two faced north. There were also north facing balconies in the study (a concerted second bedroom) and the master bedroom. There was one bathroom - pretty good sized - and a smallish U-shaped kitchen.

Those lit windows on the top floor were where the pool was. It had good views to the west and south, but no north views at all. The views to the east were obstructed by these (dirty) glass louvers.

Here's a shot of the dining area:

Westgate units are like the Cambridge units in that some are killer modern, some are "generic renovated" and some are untouched from the 60's! And everything in between! Cambridge was finished in 64' and Westgate in '65. The price range in the building reflects the wide range of condition as well. There is one for sale in Cambridge that is rather easy contemporary style that is two units combined on the 8th floor. It has west, north and east views. Mid-600's

.......and a new season of Austonian appreciation begins. It seems only yesterday when there was only a sign up on the vacant lot and we all held our breath to see if it would come out of the ground.

The Ashton seemed to take forever to rise.

I think part of that was how deep they dug. I don't know how many levels of underground parking they have, but that was one deep hole they dug.

Austonian pool

That's great about the crane coming down. How many years until we have a larger crane? 20? 30?

Forgive me if this has been mentioned before, but am I reading the Austonian website right and their pool is on the east side of their building? I'm guess Google will show it getting zero sunlight for most of the afternoon in the summer?

5 levels. They dug down 65 feet. That's equivalent to the height of City Hall.

Streetscape work is scheduled to begin this month, and in March, workers will finish lighting the glass crown. One of the three sections already has been illuminated.

We've seen renderings of a long-shot Nahua Tower next to the MACC, but scroll down to the site plan here, and phase III shows an uninspired parking garage possibly occupying the same space.

I would hate to see a tiny/ugly/above ground parking garage that close to the lake.

I'm starting to think that the gray of the "W" is going to compliment the shade of the austonian and the skyline as a whole.

Very nice. Thanks for braving the cold. It was at least 19F here in South Austin this morning.

Tom, those are really great photos! You should post them in the My City Photos section (A through M). Those are so good that the whole world should see them!
