Vancouver Lighting

Ya th Science World lights have been going on and off in the past couple weeks. They primarly stay a white/purplish colour but they change every so often to pink, red and even green. Sometimes the lights sparkle too.

I know this because i see the lights from my condo every night. They go on pretty late sometimes an go off too early. I guess they are just testing them out still.

I snapped a pic of Science World yesterday. The lights came on around 4:30pm. I didn't get a picture of it but I swear the lights faintly changed colour a bit when they first turned on. Either way there is a quality to the lighting that is noticeably different even though subtle. And you can't see it in my pics but the globe was sparkling with secondary quick-flashing lights...



I was hoping the lights at City Hall would come on around the same time but unfortunately I had to leave before they did...

I also noticed some sort of glowing signage(?) at the Athlete's Village:





And I'm disappointed that there is still yet to be any new lighting under the Cambie Street Bridge...

And while not new, I figured I might as well post this pic of the neon clock on the Vancouver Block...



And did the Vogue always have orange neon around the figure at the top of the sign? I hope they manage to get their new signage up before the Olympics...

That Warehouse sign looks like rip-off of the Welcome to Las Vegas sign.
Note the lighted figurehead on The Vogue sign.

Maybe the lighting on that pic IS the new lighting for the Cambie Street Bridge? If it is, that's awfully disappointing stuff.

I think it is suppose to be a direct spoof of the Las Vegas sign. (At least I hope that was their intention, because they are almost identical) Either way, I like it, some nice new lighting up dates!

PS - I hope the people moving into Capitol understand that they will be looking over the brightest street in the city, since Granville Street is classified as the "Entertainment District" and wont protest the possible installments of more lights/billboards in the future (or the ones that already exist), since the street has already established a strong precedent for doing such.

In areas where there were historically no pre-existing lights or entertainment district I can understand such complaints, but in this situation, I really hope that the leverage is given to the commercial aspect of Granville street, and not the residents of Capitol. Simply because, only an idiot would not know what they are buying into, and if they dont, than it is the simple rule of buyer beware.

city hall hasn't been on the last few times i have passed it

I passed by city hall tonight and the lights weren't on. Science world was lit up however. It looked odd with just an asymmetrical blob of LEDs lit up red with the rest being white.

Anyone else notice the robotic searchlights that have been installed on the Sears building? There's a set of two on both the Granville and Georgia entrance and the Robson and Howe one.

I was going to post about those lights last night but didn't know if they had been there for a while, definitely adds something to such a fugly building. wish they would powerwash the granville side though

Really, all they would have to do now powerwash and put up some large adds / video screens to make that building look good.

installed now? they used to sit on the street - i wondered if they wheeled them out every night

Since around Christmas they'be been installed on top the "arch" on the Georgia rotunda side and in the framework area on the Howe & Robson corner.

ah i noticed them on the one side never really pay attention when i am walking lol but last time onm robson was before xmas and they had lights right on the sidewalk which seemed odd and bright good to see they will be permanent

The Howe side ones cantilever fom the facade a bit - not sure how permanent they are.

Yep, the Granville side of Sears is probably the best wall for video screens and banners in the entire city, and it really needs them (along with a good scrubbing)

i thought london drugs was installing a screen there? there was a render and everything for it - it was on the small side though didn't use the space well at all...

Any designer will tell you that lighting makes or breaks a space. This February, the UBC Spacemakers will welcome Olympic visitors with Northern Lights, a series of architectural lanterns that will brighten downtown Vancouver.

The three “landform lanterns,” resembling curvy icebergs rising from the ground, are constructed of B.C. wood and recycled PVC, illuminated by LED lights. Ranging from six to 12 metres in length and one to two metres tall, they will greet an estimated 6,000 pedestrians per hour on Granville Street between Dunsmuir and Georgia, a special car-free corridor during the Games.
