I'm so glad they were able to save that building...the same kind of project could transform some of the others around the city. We still have a few gems left...let's hope the same kind of love is shown to the Utah/Pantages Theatre on Main Street.
By the way, do we know what's under that horrid Utah Theater facade that fronts the street? They've gotta do something nice to that thing.

SALT LAKE CITY — An e-mail campaign and online petition have been launched by Jordan River enthusiasts opposed to a Salt Lake City proposal to build a sports complex at approximately 2200 North along the Jordan River.
The group, which is being led by the Jordan River Restoration Network, also is urging residents to attend the City Council's meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday to voice opposition in the allowed two-minute comment period.
The City Council is scheduled to discuss the soccer complex and the issuance of $15.3 million in voter-approved bonds for the project during a work session Tuesday. The council is expected to set a public hearing for Feb. 2 to allow the public to weigh in on the project before making a decision.
Real Salt Lake has kicked in another $7.5 million for the complex, which would include soccer fields and baseball diamonds...
I read the article and the first thing to come to mind is "an excuse" for not in my back yard. Besides a few soccer and baseballs ending up in the river, I really do not see any major impact(s) of building these athletic fields. Even from the renderings posted, there is a buffer between the fields and the river.

I don't know everything as of yet, regarding the so called alternate site, proposed by the naysayers. However, of one thing I am certain, and that is that there are few developments that can more benefit the youngsters of our metro, than something like this. It is so overwhelmingly important for these types of projects to reach completion and be utilized to the hilt by many youth, who need to fill their time with this type of positive personal development and growth.
While the complex may not include 100% restoration of that section of river bank, I think it will be more beneficial to the river in the long term. This will allow exposure to the beauty, or potential beauty, and appreciation of the river by many more people. If the Jordan River Parkway is incorporated into the design and allows for park users to access the park via the parkway this will increase the usuage of the parkway and the enjoyment of the river.
I agree with you Shakman, it's NIMBY and CAVE at it's finest. IMHO
There's always got to be some kind of a "tree huger hippie group" protesting about something. I don't even see what the big deal is since this whole project is nothing more the GREEN open space.

This really baffles me. I have never heard of complaints against green space which if one thinks about it, may increase land values of the surrounding area. In addition to, the green space along the river can be extended into the surrounding areas and /or across the river.
God forbid if these opponents use the traffic excuse. I-215 is right there. I am sure that excuse will surface some shape or form once these current excuses are null and voided.

17 soccer fields. Wow. Am I the only one who think that's a little extreme? I know soccer is gaining popularity, but that just seems excessive. When would they ever use 17 fields at once?
Even with the 17 fields, couldn't they at least have a few basketball courts? Maybe a softball field? Would a dedicated football field hurt that much? Sorry I'm not concerned about the river (a few balls is the least of what you should worry about being put into that river), I just don't find the complex itself very appealing.
Perhaps an indoor and outdoor aquatic center, tennis courts and /or indoor soccer plex would be nice. I do not know the characteristics and behavior of the SLC area population, however there is a larger version of what is being proposed in a DC suburb of Germantown, MD which is successful.
I think the Soccer complex is a wonderful idea and would be a great addition to that part of the City. Hopefully it will be used by soccer clubs in SLC as well as in Southern Davis County.
I live in the Southern part of Davis County and there is a lack of quality fields. Most competition soccer teams play on school fields that are in poor condition. Trying to find an open field to practice is even more difficult. A complex like this would be great for games and the other fields would be more available for practice.
17 fields is not too many. They would all be used all day, every Saturday during soccer seasons and most fields would be used every evening during the seasons.
There is a park in Kaysville, West of I-15 (kind of in the middle of farmland) called Angel Street Park. They have 5 soccer fields of different sizes that are dedicated to just soccer. Those fields are always used and are in pristine condition. The kids that play on those fields have great facilities to use.
A well planned complex with 17 fields would really be a great addition to the city and especially for kids sporting programs

I am a little concerned about the bird habitats and others that will be destroyed or terribly inconvenienced by this project. I'm also worried about the fertilizer that will end up in the river. Perhaps the city could use eminent domain on a large parking lot that is not serving the community and located the soccer complex there.
I like the idea of using a parking lot for this development better then uprooting a field. Also, if Sigourney Weaver found out about this I bet she'd kill us all lol.
