realistic except the design competition on the arena. I think we will hear more on the arena soon.

It's too bad the Oilers — — right now.

The list is realistic, except there won't be a design competition for the arena. I am quite certain they will choose a lead architect to advance with the plan. AND we won't see any physical work completed on Jasper Ave this year. The final urban design plan has yet to be accepted by Administration. They will then ask Council to approve the budget to complete the detailed design work. Once that is completed, Administration will require Council to approve the construction budget. The earliest we'll see any action is mid-2011.

Thanks feepa and CMD. I wasn't sure if the Jasper ave stuff would start 2010 or 2011, so I thought I'd be optimistic and say this year .

^ I think this is Ian's surprise!

Edmonton at tipping point

New generation asks: Will this be a city for cars or a city for people?

BY SHEILA PRATT, EDMONTON JOURNAL
JANUARY 3, 2010

As Ian O'Donnell sees it, 2010 is the year in which Edmonton must decide whether to be a big, sprawling town or to move ahead as a city with real urban living.

The outcome of that choice will be a key factor in determining whether his generation of ambitious, educated and interesting 30-something professionals decides to stay or leave for the brighter lights of Vancouver, Toronto, or even Calgary.

O'Donnell is a big Edmonton booster and contends the city is under-rated by its own citizens as well as outsiders. People here spend too spend too much time complaining about potholes and the cold instead of appreciating the great parks, amenities, culture and livability of the city, he says.

^ Great article!

But man, I have GOT TO STOP READING THE COMMENTS SECTION. I know this. But I still do it and I still hate humanity a little more every time I do. =(

Yeah, good job Ian. You got some good points out of this site (/C2E) and out to general Edmontonians. Sadly, RTA is right, even the first comment is horrendous. Some of these comments are as brutal as the Republicans screaming "SOCIALISM" at Obama...jeez!

Quote from article above:

Quote:
Pollock is skeptical about climate change, environmentalists and a low-carbon future.

The world's climate change talks of today, which played out in Copenhagen in December, will be relegated to history. They're like the Y2K computer "crisis" of 2000 -- over-baked and now forgotten, he predicts.

Any international agreement on global warming is simply about "wealth transfer" to developing countries.

"The sooner people figure that out, the better," says Pollock, adding that "trees need carbon dioxide."

Pollock says he'd like to have a public debate about climate change.
Hmm, just lost a lot of respect for Larry Pollack. A public debate over climate change would be great, but let's remember the debate would largely be a scientific one, outlining the physical constraints we may have in a warmer future. I just hope the general public is ready to spend some time gaining basic scientific literacy around these issues to have a meaningful and informed debate.

Yikes. Anyways, back to construction...

Fantastic job Ian.

Re: comments section, this doesn't surprise me at all. The responses are no different than what you read in other newspapers.

^ Debating climate change and reducing emissions is a fair debate.....taking money from one pocket to another to make people feel good is irresponsible and shameful.

hopefully in ten years we will stop giving a 1/4 of the space to people like Susan McGee. advocate for apologies and guilt. boo hoo.

Not really a fan of Taft....but the guy basically summed up everything we discuss on here on a regular basis. My opinion my have changed.

Three opinions that correlate to the Edmonton I want to live in. it would have been interesting if the journal did something similar to that ten years ago...probably a very different vision.

^10-years ago ol' Edmonton was reeling from the lack-of-economic-progress 90's. We've come a long ways, but we need to continue advancing in order to keeping ourselves competitive with the rest of the world.

^Ha, indeed....I believe the interview took place at what was the newest and only downtown core streetfront Starbucks on Jasper and 101.
