Is this blue lighting on the Birks building (698 W. Hastings) new? If so, maybe we'll see more and more of this highlighting soon. Imagine the Art Gallery with this kind of lighting all around.

been a few weeks - theres a lot of building with the same kind of thing, gastown, crosstown areas have some cool old buildings lit up

and unless someone gifts it to the library they don't have that kind of money to spend on lighting - they are desperate to move and don't want to waste money

Man the RBC building looks really depressing all dirty. I mean they aren't in the same predicament as sears is but come on, I'm pretty sure a bank can afford to pressure wash it once.

...or can't they?

^ I disagree. It was built in the 30s and looks like it. It might need a pressure wash but that's about all.

.... beauty..... past and present......

This lighting gig for classy old buildings is fabulous! And yes, I sure hope they try it on the Georgia Street Art Gallery façade .... imagine it .... especially with the lions lit up.

I have to shed a tear, though, when I think of the original Birks Building façade at Granville and Goergia where London Drugs and the Scotia Tower now sit.

The building inside was just an old office building like any other, but the Edwardian façade was classic, beautiful, elegant, irreplacable ..... and gone.

The lighting effects that could have been done with it .... it is to weep.

Nice. Thanks for the pics.

I remember when the Royal Bank Tower had its logo changed - it took a long time to get powerwashed to remove traces of the outline (of dirt) of the old logo.

The lighting on the Birks building is nice in the evening, but absolutely horrendous at night. It's much, much too bright. It doesn't highlight the building's columns; it completely overpowers them. I don't understand why it's so difficult to do lighting properly in this city.

The tower had been pressure-washed a little while back. Perhaps they just haven't had time to get to the lower part. They will, though; RBC is usually pretty good about exterior upkeep, unlike Sears. Too bad they've defiled the building by putting up those cartoonish banners; now you can't see the beautiful First Nations artwork through the windows.

Maybe you're just joking, but that's RBC's official Olympic advertisement. They've running that marketing campaign for quite some time now.

Yea, you're right. Edmonton has a lot of pyramids. Muttart Conservatory, City Hall, West Edmonton Mall has one I think.
