Agreed. Not to mention that you really have to see this one in person to get a proper perspective of how it fits into the neighborhood.

In photos, I think it looks silly.
In person, I think it's fine.

I drove by at the end of the week, looked cool. I think it sort of brightens up an area that otherwise has the ugly backdrop of the 405 behind it. Takes your eyes off the freeway.

▲▲ I will mention (although you probably are aware of this) but the bridge was scrapped....the "concept" still has merit, IMO.

You're right, I am mentioning the concept. I don't understand it though...can't pedestrians/bikes already go UNDER the 405 through multiple streets?

sure - south of glisan, the freeway is in a trench, north of glisan it's on an elevated approach to the fremont bridge.

exactly, this was one of those things that I thought sounded like a good idea, but the only way it should of been paid for should of been through fund raising and donations because the Pearl and NW are already well connected and it would of been a waste of money for the city....but that is more of a past thought now that this bridge is scrap metal.

I saw a yellow crane out of the corner of my eye in this area on the streetcar today. My guess is it's for this project?

Yes the yellow crane has been moved in to help construct this project. It is making good progress thus far! =)

If this turns out looking anything like those renderings, it's going to look really nice. It's a shame the Pearl doesn't have more of this style.

To each his own, I suppose... I think it looks terrible. If they *must* imitate an old style, I'd rather they imitate something like 705 NW Davis, The Embassy, or the base of the North Park Lofts building ...

Is it the exterior or bricks you don't care for?

What I like is the size and shape of it. I'm not sure what the proper architectural term is, perhaps "massing"? It hugs the sidewalk and has a courtyard like a classic urban building but isn't so tall it creates lots of shadows. The windows and other features are all nicely symetrical and properly sized. It's got a base, a middle, and a top like all classic structures. It might not stand out but I expect it would contribute to the atmosphere one feels while standing on the opposite street corner and looking at the block.

Really more cities need this kind of infill, it makes everything feel much bigger and urban even if the individual building is a forgettable one.

Like I said, to each his own, but personally, I find this building unappealing.

It strikes me as big, bulky, and almost brutal. The windows seem very small. Its u-shape reminds me of the old apartment buildings in NW, but its proportions somehow strike me as inelegant.

I’m generally not a fan of fussy design details, but I might find this particular building more appealing if it had more of them. I like the horizontal scoring on the first floor, but I think it would look better if it was a lighter stone (like on the Embassy and 705 NW Davis). It strikes me as something you would end up with if you were to take a building like The Embassy and perform a low-cost rehab.

Assuming it's on a standard-size block, the massing should be very similar to the apartment building at SW Broadway and Market, if you're interested in a comparative.
