Thanks for the help flar and Robert Pence. Yes, I always carry a camera bag with me when I am using my camera and it seems to be decently cushioned. It isn't an awfully large bag, so I don't know if gel pacs would fit...sometimes I have a difficult time putting the strap in (despite this, it still does have room for 1 more lens). The plastic bag thing would be good, but my problem is I find that I go from out to in lots. And when I go inside, unless I'm going home or something, I usually want to take pictures too, and don't want to have to wait for the condensation to leave (how long does that even take??). Also, if I'm only going to be inside for a short 10 mins (maybe myself just warming up or going to the washroom or taking a quick light rail ride [here the downtown stations are underground akin to subway]) would I really need to worry about condensation and cold-to-hot differences when I'm going to be right out all over again right away?

ps -- i'm not one to go out for hours in -30ºC weather (-22ºF), but will for -10 (14ºF) or -15 (5ºF).....

mean its poster size or that it aint photographic
paper but actual poster paper..answer anyone..

No idea, I just had a bunch of mine printed 12x18 at Costco, it's cheaper than Flickr...wait, I just realized who I was responding to. Does Ireland have Costco?

Maybe I'll have better luck here than Flickr, so...

This has happened once before, just to let you know beforehand. How did it fix? I don't know, it just sort of all came back after I took some new pictures.

So I have a Lexar 4gb SD card for my Nikon D40 camera. I took a bunch of pictures recently, but hadn't put them on the computer, you know with the holidays and whatnot. So this morning I decide to finally put these new pictures on my computer, and I use a thing that I put my SD into that on the other end is a USB, so I open the folder to transfer my images onto the computer, and a buuunch of the photos don't load. So I decide to close and reopen, and I find probably 80% of the photos...vanished.

So I tried putting the SD back on the camera, no luck. Put it back on the comp, no luck. Turn off camera, no luck. Blah blah. Even tried a different computer, no luck. So I tried to just take some pictures, that made the images reappear last time. I've done that a few times, no luck.

Maybe it had to do with the cold the camera has been in for the past few days, but last night everything worked fine so somehow I'm doubtful (especially because last time my camera was out in the cold I decided to try one of the techniques mentioned to avoid condensation, etc.).

I had a lot of awesome pics that I was excited to showcase and I don't actually think they're gone per se, but it's just whether or not I'll ever be able to access them again. Does anybody have any ideas, any similar situations? I think I'm going to go out and get a new SD card though as this has happened once already with the same damn card.

EDIT: Also, on camera, it shows the same number of images have been taken as before the images had disappeared, but the images are of course not there.

Just thought I'd add an update...I just installed some recovery photography software and it seems to have done the trick!

Does anybody think these programs are bad or anything?

^I've found that my old USB card reader (multi-format for Compact Flash, SD, etc) only works up to a certain size so taking more photos on a larger SD card doesn't work.

I usually just connect the camera directly to the computer now and haven't had any problems.

^Well, for the most part other than 2 X, it has worked. I'll keep that in mind, but I'm not sure if thats the case.

Sorry for all the questions lately, but I've get yet another!

I've gotten some gift cards to local camera shoppes for Christmas and along with money I have enough money for another lens. I'm not sure if I actually want to get something yet, but I'm sure it would not hurt.

I think the one that will really make most use for me, coupled with price and reviews, would be Nikon's Nikkor (?) 50mm f1.8 AF lens.

Couple things regarding this...

1) AF means on Nikon D40/D40x/D60/D3000/D5000 it will not autofocus due to discrepancies in motors, but will manual focus. I've heard with such a low f stop it makes more sense to mf anyways (and I am pretty familiar with manual focus, I use it often, and until a couple mo s ago I used it solely) to be more specific on what to focus on and everything. Is this true? Will it be much of an issue for me based on what I described? I admit I prefer autofocus due to ease, but mf is alright (my main issue was A: time it took; B: sometimes I would not focus exactly right and what was supposed to be in focus would not be). Now, there is an AF-S version which will autofocus but it is much more expensive (for me anyways).

2) Focal length. I'm wondering, and this would be especially useful from people with experience, if 50mm is a good focal lenght for what I do in photography. That for those who don't know is urban photography/street photog (including people shots), landscapes, and bokeh like effects. Also, do you find issue with not being able to zoom at all, that's my worry, but I am sure Id be able to get used to it.

3) Operation. My other lenses are 55-200mm VR and 18-55mm Kit both Nikkor, and I'm wondering if this 50mm'er will need to be operated differently and how in comparison?

^Nice. I use two lenses, one being the 50mm F/1.4D. I love it. It does hunt and poke on my D50 when auto-focusing at low f-stops as you said. I haven't had much chance to try it on the D90, but it was working well around the house the other day. I haven't had any experience with the 1.8, but from what I've read, it's really just the build quality and one lower f-stop that is the difference (allthough there might be some auto-focus differences for you with the D40).

50mm just means you need to wander a little more with your feet than with your lens. I would say that buying a 50mm lens and leaving it on the camera for a few months made me a better photographer. It made me see the world in a different manner.

This thread was all done with the 50mm. Not some of my best work, but it shows how it fares doing the urban thing (outside of people).

Also, I've heard because the aperture can go so large (or small in numerical values) you can walk handheld at night...if so, how effective is that??

The only hard part is the manual focusing in low light.
I chose the 35mm ED lens. It is a little more in cost but still worth it. And it auto focuses.

it just doesn't work!

i got it, put wrapping paper on it and placed it in a box in my room (so that my little brother didn't figure out that santa isn't real. i place all the gifts under the tree at like 3 am) so it wasn't in any humid place or anything. and i'm 100%sure it's not humid, i have my 15 hundred dollar computer, my 200 dollar phone, my 250 dollar ipod, and other little things and they all work fine! so that OBVIOUSLY means it's not my fault. I didn't drop it or leave it anywhere where it would get broken.

sigh. i was really really hoping to use it to take christmas pictures

not only that! i ordered a demb pro and i only got a bounce-card and not the diffuser. what's up with that? anyways, the diffuser gets shipped tomorrow but it was supposed to be a christmas gift along with my sb-600.

and the worse part is that I worked on christmas afternoon and i've been working every day since. i didn't even get to play with my flash until tonight!

this christmas sucked!

^why would you work on christmas? i guess it depends on the job, benefits, part time/full time, etc.

yeah im sending it back tomorrow. I'll have it replaced, but i definitely want it.

well this is my first job, and it's at a theater. and christmas is the busiest day of the year. i know, i was surprised too, but boy was it BUSY! My feet were killing me by the end of the night, And good thing I'm a minor (I can only work 8 hrs a day max) or else I would've worked till close (which is at 1:30 in the morning!!!).

so yeahh, i got hired like a week ago, it's my first job and the only way to get the job is if you work on christmas, but whatever. i make 8.55 an hour, it's not that much, it's minimum but at least i'm making money!!! savin up for the Tokina! (or the Sigma, or the Tamron, or the other Tamron, or a portable 500 gig memory thing, or just random stuff like food).

And yeah, theaters are very busy, I'm sure if you were working retail you would not have likely worked Christmas, but if you guys have crazy sales like what we do up here, Dec 26 would be hectic (but at least you'd get the Holiday off).

congrats on the D90 HiMS; i prefer the card reader...when you get over 1000 pics, new folders get set up and files are named screwy.
