Tantra at Lonsdale Quay, which was known for amazing views and mediocre food and service, is now becoming an East Side Marios, which is known for OK service but equally mediocre food.

no one is sure at this point. lets hope for the latter. but maybe we will get some — Coca-cola Cafe or McCafe for the games or something like that.

I'm a little surprised the retail has been empty for so long same with the TV Towers across the street. you would think someone would bite especially with the Stadium and Entertainment districts all around you.

That end IS pretty deserted so I'm not surprised it has taken awhile. Hopefully it is a permanent thing.

That area will be coming alive in the next couple of years with so many buildings coming to completion, and we need the shops and restaurants

interesting stuff. they are like olive garden only more — if you will. this will be the 3rd location in the Metro. Coquitlam and Langley.

I'm personally surprised that Olive garden has been so slow to grow in Canada.

Yuck East Side Mario's. Give me a Boston Pizza ANY DAY of the week over that.

Not that we really need any *more* of these boring chain restaurants.

a smaller scale organic grocery store (think the smaller sized choices for size comparison) is set to open in the former V6A sales center in the Brick building at 2nd and Quebec.

Sounds like the Fitness Worlds in town will be rebranded:

NBA's Nash lends name to fitness chain

Plan is to use Nash's status as a Canadian sports hero to expand clubs nationally

Michael Grange

From Tuesday's Globe and Mail

At 35 years old, Steve Nash has found the fountain of youth, at least by professional basketball standards.

A mid-career dedication to fitness and a better diet has made the Phoenix Suns star healthier and stronger than he was when he broke into the National Basketball Association 14 years ago.

Now, his business partners hope that association will translate into marketing power – and profit – in what is believed to be Canada's first celebrity-branded national fitness chain.

In a deal announced Monday, a company backed by Mr. Nash acquired British Columbia's largest fitness company, Fitness World. The new chain will be Steve Nash Fitness World. Mr. Nash already has two Vancouver-area fitness clubs, with a third to open in White Rock, B.C., under the Steve Nash Sports Club banner.

“I think there's an inspiration around Steve as an athlete and his connection to the community here,” said Mark Mastrov, co-owner of New Evolution Fitness Company, a private equity firm specializing in the fitness industry and one of three partners in the deal, along with Mr. Nash and Angelo Gordon and Co., also a private equity firm.

“We like the fact that [his name] cuts through the clutter … He's a giving person and at the same time he's known as a very fit person, so it allows us to inspire people to exercise.”

The move Monday means Mr. Nash's name will soon be on 16 locations across his home province. But the plan is to use Mr. Nash's status as a Canadian sports hero to help the chain expand nationally, said Mr. Mastrov, a fitness industry heavyweight who borrowed $15,000 (U.S.) from his grandmother in 1983 to buy a stake in a single health club in California, and built it into a chain that was eventually sold for $1.6-billion.

Terms of the deal were not released, but Mr. Mastrov said that Mr. Nash was an equity partner in the arrangement and the new chain of clubs should generate revenue of more than $50-million (Canadian) annually from 100,000 members.

“We're a very profitable company with lots of aspiration to grow,” Mr. Mastrov said. Their first location outside B.C. will be in Toronto. The group has a lease signed with an announcement expected by year end, Mr. Mastrov said.

The largest existing fitness chain in Canada is London, Ont.-based Good-Life Fitness Centres Inc. which has 200 locations and has plans to expand to 300 in the next two years.

New Evolution struck a partnership with the Ultimate Fighting Championships this year to open a chain of branded health clubs that will feature signature gyms in various UFC stars' home markets, including one for Montreal native and UFC star Georges St. Pierre. They also completed a $40-million (U.S.) acquisition of Crunch, a boutique brand in bankruptcy protection.

The partnership between Mr. Mastrov and Mr. Nash was a natural one. Mr. Mastrov was a point guard who played college basketball; he watched Mr. Nash when the latter starred at Santa Clara University before heading to the NBA. He also knew Mr. Nash's long-time agent, Bill Duffy.

Anyone who bought Olympics tickets in the UK has been instructed to pick them up from Raffles. So I'm guessing that's what those storefronts will be used for - a temporary Olympic ticket pick-up area for non-residents.

That's sort of a bummer about the space at Raffles being temporary, but not unexpected.

Wal-Mart wants to expand in 'Borough

Theresa McManus
The Record

Wednesday, December 23, 2009

Wal-Mart is seeking to expand its Queensborough store to provide a full-service grocery store.

Council received a preliminary report at its Dec. 14 meeting about a proposal to build an addition on the existing Wal-Mart store at Queensborough Landing. The store is currently

12, 449 square metres (134,000 square feet), and the applicant is proposing to add 2,371 square metres (25,588 square feet) to the south side of the existing store.

"The addition is to provide the floor space needed for a full-service grocery store," said a report to council.

A nine-square-metre addition is also proposed at the existing front door.

"The proposed addition is in an area of the site that has been set aside in the original site plan for Wal-Mart expansion," said the report. "The proposed addition is in conformance with the land-use designation of the site. The design will need to conform to the existing design guidelines."

The next steps in the process include circulating the proposal to all city departments for review and having the site development and architectural design reviewed by the city design panel.

Saw a similar, if not the same, logo to the Steve Nash Sports Clubs on a Fitness World window as Steve Nash Fitness World on Howe (I think) this afternoon.

Yeah, there's two Bread Gardens.
The Granville one needs better signage.

*********

Yeah - There'll be two levels of clubs - "Steve Nash Sports Club" and "Steve Nash Fitness World".
Fitness World members are being given an opportunity (til Jan 31, 2010) to upgrade to "all access" - not sure of the cost though.
I know that people at work pay between $60-80 per month for Steve Nash Sports Club, whereas I pay $19 per month for Fitness World (reduced fee after a few years of $40 (which included a portion for initiation fee).
Not sure if it would be worth it for "all access" since it would only effectively add one location for me (@ The Hudson).
Hopefully it'll mean upgrades/renovations at the regular Fitness World locations.

That Bread Garden was supposed to open in that space last July. I'm wondering if it still a go or maybe they've decided to bail instead.
