I'm not sure what the actual SF of the 1300 S. Walmart is, but Walmart supercenters like it are typically in the 200,000 to 250,000 SF range which would actually make the Target store significantly smaller.

It will not be a supertarget unless they add more square footage. When they say at least for now, they mean it will this new format or just a regular old Target.

A couple of posts ago, I gave a link to Target's website which indicates that Super Target 's are around 174,000 in size.

Perhaps structured parking is being included in the square footage of this Taget? I have not seen or can find any renderings. Anyone else have any luck?

Becker makes final recommendation for public safety complex site

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker is recommending a site for a new public safety complex.

Becker says after months of public comment and review of several sites, the block across the street from Library Square is the final recommended location for the complex.

Ok now maybe we can finally move on with this project before we hear MORE whining from groups of people that will find something wrong with THIS site.

That is very good news. Another major plus for the future of Main Street is making some important progress. No doubt this project will now move along at a much faster clip than previously, with everything that is happening all around it.

I like that they're going begin cleaning up and taking advantage of the street presence as soon as possible, while gathering funds for the restoration.

GOP Convention

That is some seriously detailed architecture. It has become quite rare to see such architecture.

More, possible, great news:

GOP looking at Salt Lake to host 2012 convention
December 23rd, 2009 @ 8:31pm
By Sheryl Worsley
SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City is among the places Republicans have their sights on to host the party convention in 2012.

The national party has sent a letter to Salt Lake asking for its pitch to host the big show.

Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau president Scott Beck says the Olympics gave the city a good reputation.

"[We] handled issues like transportation, security, hotel venues, off-site venues; we clearly have the infrastructure to do that," he says.

Beck says 10 other cities are also putting together bids.

With all those Republicans in town, I'll probably have a constant rash. Also we'll have Republicans going the wrong way on the freeway and belligerently claiming that everyone else is going the wrong way and stubbornly refusing to change, resulting in severe deadlock -- a little like Congress.

Seriously, this would be good for Salt Lake. It's a good reason to get started on that convention hotel. I wonder if there are any plans yet.

I think that Sandy should make a bid for it. They could have the convention at the South Towne Expo Center and they could all stay at the Courtyard by Marriott.

The only other suitable venue besides the Delta Center would be the probably be the E Center.

Or the Hyatt that's a little bit closer, but not by much.
In Sandy I think there needs to be a hotel on state street across from the Expo Center.
As for SLC if we lose out on this bid it will be because we don't yet have a convention hotel. The city really needs to get the ball rolling on that.

AMAZING!

What would really be cool would be if could go follow in Denver's footsteps and get the DNC in town, but I guess that would never happen - at least not for many, many years.

Any convention that can bring more press and business to town should be seen as a plus, however. This could be a good thing. I certainly would stay up here in Ogden for the duration of the Republican Rendezvous.

That would be great for the city. I realize that, sadly, most people here are democrats, but this is a great thing. I would even be happy if the DNC came here.

This would be big for SLC. We might even see increased speed for the Airport LRT, convention hotel and street cars.

For night life, this may also spur the broadway theater on Main.

Come on SLC, don't miss this opportunity.

I gotta second Orlando- that was a funny post Although I do think hosting the RNC would bring a tona $$$ to SLC for a couple days, I don't think the city should waste too much time and cash trying to win the bid. If the Republican party is serious about wining more seats- then it must try to get back to the "big tent" philosophy. Some other city, preferentially in a potential swing state with more population, probably fits the bill better than SLC.

Hmmm. SLC host the GOP convention?
On the one hand, it brings attention, dollars, and people to SLC. But then...
On the other hand, it brings attention that reenforces Utah's reputation as a radical right-wing state of extreme conservatism, it brings dollars that help the republican party, and it brings people that are the most stubborn of republicans....
For my part, I'd pass.

Why sadly? We're a diverse city, and democrats are more progressive when it comes to social justices.
