The naming rights thing could be a long way off. I mean the Cowboys just literally opened their stadium and they dont have one yet. The Giants are about 8 months away from opening theres to any sort of events.

And in this economic climate, they'll try and wait it out for the best deal.

Giant and Jet fans can now avoid game-day gridlock on the way to the gridiron.

A new NJ Transit Meadowlands line from Hoboken and Secaucus to the stadium will open next week, and officials hope it will help fans do an end-around past perpetually clogged roads on game days.

The will run every 10 minutes starting three hours before game time and every 10 minutes after the final gun for two hours.

It turns out you CAN get there from here -- but it takes a while.

Former Jets wide receiver Wayne Chrebet will help Metro-North Railroad kick off its experimental service to Jets and Giants football games at the Meadowlands.

Chrebet will greet fans in Larchmont, N.Y., on Sunday morning. Then he and the railroad's president will take the train from Westchester County to New Jersey.

The train starts in Connecticut, and also stops in Rye, N.Y.

NJ Transit provides part of the service.

The 86-mile run from New Haven to Secaucus, N.J., takes about 2 1/2 hours.

The adult fare is $22.50 from Rye. The fare for children, ages 5 to 11, is $1.50.

Jets, Giants will bid to host 2014 Super Bowl at new stadium

The day figures to be frigid, and there might be snow plus a good chance of wind, but the sales pitch of the Giants and Jets as they attempt to acquire the 2014 Super Bowl for their new $1.7 billion stadium is that some of the greatest games in NFL history have been played in cold weather.

"Why not this one?" Giants co-owner John Mara said yesterday.

The league's Super Bowl advisory committee gave preliminary approval to the Giants and Jets to bid on Super Bowl XLVIII after it agreed to waive the standard requirements of 50-degree weather or a climate-controlled indoor stadium. A preliminary proposal is due April 1 with the secret-ballot vote by the owners scheduled for a May 24-26 meeting in Dallas.

Three other cities are expected to make a bid for the 2014 game. Sources say that Miami, which hosts this season's game on Feb. 7, and Glendale, Ariz., are two of them. The other is either Houston or Tampa. The NFL has had three Super Bowls in cold-weather cities - two in Detroit, one in Minnesota - but never outdoors.

Although commissioner Roger Goodell was not involved in the committee's decision, he was on the conference call for its discussion. "I think Roger feels good about it," Jets owner Woody Johnson said.

In a statement, the teams' stadium company framed the bid as a "unique, once-only circumstance based on the opportunity to celebrate the new stadium and the great heritage and history of the NFL in the New York region." There had been talk of putting a Super Bowl at Giants Stadium after 9/11, but that never gained momentum. The Jets had been conditionally awarded this season's game if they were able to complete the West Side stadium project, but obviously that never came to fruition.

Mara said he has spoken to owners who "showed and expressed their support of it. Whether it is enough or not, I don't know. The league has demonstrated we have great football games in cold weather, even in ridiculously cold weather like in Green Bay. Why not play the Super Bowl in it?"

The question is whether the owners will approve playing the Super Bowl in cold weather and whether that will be fair to the fans. Why would the NFL want to put its signature game in what would not necessarily be ideal conditions? "For the same reason 15 million people choose to live in New York," Johnson said.

The Super Bowl was played in a downpour three years ago in Miami. And the NFC title game between the Packers and Giants in Green Bay two years ago took place in a minus-23 wind chill.

"I think we have a good chance," Mara said. "I don't want to jinx us, but it's not going to be any colder than it was in Green Bay. That was as good a game as you will ever see. The positives far outweigh the negatives."

I have nothing against this overpriced stadium, but Championship football needs to be played in a neutral environment. Not hot or cold.

The Super Bowl needs to be hosted in stadiums other than the typicals we see every year. The NFL season is held mostly in the fall and early winter, so why have a rule where its biggest game is only played in a southern warmer climate? Makes no sense.

I agree. The Florida and California stadiums have a bunch of Super Bowls, but that there can't be one at some of the most iconic football palaces--Soldier Field or Lambeau Field? Unbelievable...

Will they be able to implode Giants stadium, since they are in New Jersey and not New York, or is the new stadium simply too close to implode the old one?

I think they will be able to. Back about 10 years ago when Heinz Field went up it was about as far from 3 rivers as the new meadowlands stadium is from Giants Stadium.. and they imploded 3 rivers.

Theres no reason to take apart Giants Stadium piece by piece like Yankee. Let it go out in a blaze of glory.

Memorabilia from Giants Stadium will be up for sale. There's no reason to believe the stadium will be imploded.

In watching the last Jets game on TV, they remarked that the old Giants Stadium cannot be imploded as the proximity to the new Meadowlands was too close.

It can be , if you do it right , but it will be costly. I beleave NJT has plans injunction with the Meadowlands corporation or whatever they are called , to build a Transit JCT station on the site of the old stadium. Which will be need when Xanadu opens. NJT has plans to Extend the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Network to the Meadowlands via Secacuse form the North Bergen Terminal.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the prospect of a potentially cold-weather Super Bowl at the new Giants Stadium in 2014 is “interesting” to him.

Goodell adds that there would be real benefits if the owners chose to award that game to the new stadium.

He says being exposed to the elements isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“There are real benefits to the league considering this,” he said. “Playing in the elements is central to the way the game of football is played. I think being able to do that and celebrate the game of football in the No. 1 market could have tremendous benefits.”

The Giants and Jets want to bring the Super Bowl to their new 82,500-seat stadium in East Rutherford in what most certainly would be a chilly NFL title game. The $1.6 billion stadium set to open later this year does not have a retractable roof or a dome.

Can someone explain why the three new stadiums Yankee, Mets, Giants/jets have no roofs...New York's climate isn't exactly the greatest in the U.S.( hot muggy summers, plus the fall and winter can get very uncomfortable)

The Giants/Jets initially planned a retractable roof (for the Super Bowl and other events), but decided against it because of cost considerations, and becuase they decided they didn't need a dome to compete for the Super Bowl (because of the attractiveness of the market).

In addition, the Giants owners (Mara family) had some misgivings of a roof, since they believed that football should always be played in the elements. The Jets owners (Johnson & Johnson family) originally preferred a retractable roof.

As for the Yankees and Mets, both stadia were to get retractable roofs under Giuliani, who included full funding for both roofs in the city budget.

What happened?

9-11 occured, which radically altered budget priorities, and Bloomberg was elected. Bloomberg was against taxpayer funding of stadia, and eliminated funding for the roofs.

Giuliani budgeted $250 million each for the new stadia, which would have paid for the roofs and about half the cost of the stadia. Bloomberg eliminated all stadium funding, and only offered surrounding infrastructure improvements (new train stations, parking garages, outside landscaping, etc.)

The Giants/Jets stadium was funded much the same. Not a penny of govt. expenditures for the stadium itself, but the State paid for a new train station and new highway exit.
