I believe the Huskies idea was just an interim idea, obviously a larger stadium would need to be constructed at another location if the CFL came calling.

SMU could possibly work. If 20,000 - 25,000 seats could be fit onto this site. I would think that eventually a more permanent stadium would be needed. I wonder if SMU would consider this level of expansion since it would have a big impact on their campus. Probably the person to speak to would be the athletics director. Does anyone on this forum have connections at SMU? In the end, both the Dean and Athletics director would have to agree on it and probably the city would have to approve it.

It would be great to have a stadium ready in the near future so that Halifax doesn't lose the opportunity of getting a CFL team.

Goodman Stadium

Here is another sunken bowl design. Goodman Stadium is at LeHigh University in Pennsylvania and seats 16,000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodman_Stadium . If the field was built to Canadian football dimensions and the lower bowl complete then it looks like it would seat about 30,000. Then for large events more temporary seats could be added above the lower bowl (at street level) in the end zones.

If the upper tier was built so that it partly overhung the lower bowl then it would be a very compact design with a small footprint. Also, it could be built in stages; stage 1 could be 10,000 seats in the lower bowl, stage 2 - complete the lower bowl to give 20,000 seats and then stage 3 could be the partial upper tier for 30,000 permanent seats. If the upper tier was completely surrounding a Canadian field then it would likely be at least 40,000 seats (or more)

I just wanted to point out that I paid for a 2 year term for the website named halifaxstadium.ca. It will be at least a week before anything will be posted on it (right now you will just get a hostpapa.com message).

I know somebody that can help with the layout. I would like to post various potential designs, site locations, and opinions of advocates of the stadium. Eventually I would also like to display 3-D renderings of a stadium design at a couple different locations.

I am also compiling opinions of people in the HRM and outside the HRM who support a stadium and once finished I would like to send it to the HRM councilors. It will be about another week to finish the compilation (I will post this on the new halifaxstadium.ca website also).

A sunken bowl design has a lot of merit in terms of decreasing the footprint and the overall presence of a stadium. The trouble with a sunken bowl in Halifax is that you would need tonnes of dynamite.......

Good to hear!

I'm not so good with designing websites, but I'm reasonably good with photoshop, in case you want some graphics made.

Let me know if I can help.

Best,

dmont.

That is true but once it is complete it will last for a couple thousand years like the Roman Colosseum since it will have a very firm foundation (solid bedrock).

What about getting someone like Harv Stewart onboard?

Getting Harv Stewart sounds like a great idea. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harv_Stewart , for the sake of out of towners). In order to get this stadium underway we might also need to organize rallys. A few thousand people marching through the streets of Halifax carrying signs saying that we want a stadium will have an effect.

Maybe you could get in touch with the people at atlanticschooners.com to see if they would be interested in having a link to their site on your halifaxstadium.ca site and vise versa? They have an e-mail address there if you wish to get in touch with them. Also I think you need a link to a brand new petition that would gage current support. Some of the other petitions are fairly old. You need to get the word out to people about your new site. I can post on the CFL forum when your up and running as well I'll send as many people that I know who would be interested in seeing a new stadium in Halifax your link and encourage them to do so as well. Perhaps you can also post something on FB with a link to your new site.

Thanks for the ideas. It will be at least another week. Once it is up and running I hope that there will be a lot of additional suggestions on how to improve it. I sent an email to the Schooners but just got an automated response.

Halifax Memorial Stadium?

Here is an idea of how a new stadium could look on the DND Willow Park lands. The stadium rendering is a slightly modified InfoCision stadium (Akron, Ohio). (source http://channel1media.com/akron/2009/ ). I did not alter the field dimensions. (These are the US football dimensions). However, a Canadian football field will fit on this site. This would have 27,000 bench style seats and would have room for expansion in the end zones. It could be expanded to about 40,000 by adding seats in the end zones. It is a sunken bowl design and an additional 3000 people could sit on the grass hill at the end of the stadium.

The InfoCision stadium was built for $61 million dollars which included the media tower and luxury seats (not shown in this modification).

Since this is so close to the site of the Halifax Explosion it could be named the Halifax Memorial Stadium. The 100th year anniversary of the Halifax Explosion will be in 2017.

It wouldn't surprise me. This area has been subjected to poor planning for 50 years. Hopefylly someone from DND will see the potential in a stadium vs a gas station? Having the Forum across the street may enhance the possibilities for uses. A tunnel or pedway could link the two sites.

The lot at the corner of Windsor and Young is owned by Suncor and they may build a gas station there. However, DND owns the remainder of the site and there is more than enough property there -- almost 22 acres.

Good job reserving the website name, Fenwick16. A step in the right direction.

I was thinking about ferries for the different Dartmouth sites that were brought up. Each ferry can hold ~400 people and each round trip takes 30 minutes. With 3 ferries all on one route going full out, a ferry could depart a station every 10 minutes. With 6 trips per hour, the station could transport 2,400 people per hour.

i find it kind of interesting that Hamilton's Ivor Wynn stadium is in the middle of this residential neighborhood,
they must not have half as many NIMBYs as we do,
which is kind of sad.
