The hard surface (birck or stone?) should ground the tower well (unlike the podium on Capitol and, to some extent, Shangri-La)

Shangri-la has a concrete appendage holding half the building up, that is a grounding enough feature for me.

That big column?
I was referring to the Burberry / Thurlow side of the base (although there is nice stonework where the Shangri-La logo is located on the Georgia side).
The other side looks great.

BTW - the new website for the project has some [old] construction pics - including one of the ballroom.
Not sure how tall the ballroom and infill areas around the back are.

How many more floors before they get to the height of the Heritage tower? I'm just thinking maybe we'll be able to start the new year with construction flush and then topping out late fall.

It looks like 5 or so floors before it's at the height of the existing building. They're on the 8th floor of the tower podium now I think.

I used to think they could at least match the height of the hotel portion by the Olympic work stoppage... but I don't think that's gonna happen anymore...

Thanks for the photo Locked-in. I haven't been by the 'Georgia in a couple weeks so it is nice to see the progress.

out of curiosity . . . .

Does anyone know anything about this? I like the glass panels; I think they add a sleek look to the building, although they would be very hard to keep clean, and would add an extra, exterior layer of glass in front of the main windows.

Does anyone have information on this? . . . or am I just mistaken, and perceiving it the wrong way?

Take a look at the first page of the thread, the original one did have these panels. The way that it looks from the other renders is those will be the windows of the condos, whereas the non-windowed areas will be the balconies.

i'm still blown away by the small lot size on this one. it's really a shame that it won't be built out, or even top out, before the olympics. in a perfect world, first time visitors in february could have wandered past, looked left and succumbed to that "wow" feeling.

It's nice to wow people with great buildings, but I think it's even better to wow people with projects under construction. The olympic audiences on TV and in the city will look and say: Wow! look at the Vancouver economy! They are building all these projects during the 'worst recession ever'! That's the best kind of reaction I can think of.
