^ it's surprising how much better your photoshop looks. but you're probably right. I'm sure they weren't constructing the building and thinking "ya know, why don't we just make the top ugly as sin for no reason". even still, they should have had better renders. Do they design the renders before they get vendor documents in for the damper? maybe. they probably shouldn't lead us on like that, though

Who's to say the roof spikes have been eliminated? Obviously, the balconies at the top aren't finished yet, and those big doorframes aren't gonna stay teal-colored. There's a lot of finishing work left to do. Hell, they didn't finish the decorative stuff on One Museum Park for MONTHS after people started moving in.

Elysian vs. 15 Central Park West

Have any of you here seen 15 Central Park West in person? How does that building compare to The Elysian in your personal opinion?

Here are some photos of 15 Central Park West

And their horizon of emotional/professional investment in a project is only a couple of years -- while architects are stuck with their reputations forever (their only out is to "plant vines" - f.l.w.).
Amen to that.

The Stern building, with those NYC-style setbacks, is more like Adrian Smith's pomo work for SOM here in Chicago (eg, ATT & NBC) - a modern tower that evokes history through massing rather than through overt historicism.

Whereas The Elysisan is overtly historicist.

They don't compare. 15 Central Park West is superlative in all aspects. For me personally, it is the gorgeous limestone cladding that really sets it apart. To make that investment is so rare these days. The setting is also much, much more grand.

The total sell out for 15 CPW was 2 billion. It blows away the Elysian in every category. No comparison it the two.

Anyone who took some fresh update photos lately?

Great comparison! I noticed the same. The roof is the main problem.
Really disappointing. We can only hope they're willing to do something about that.

The window washing rig would have probably cost a few $000 more to get above the pylons.

In terms of comparing the two it’s like comparing a Rolls Royce (15 CPW), to a Buick.

I’ve seen 15 CPW in person on a number of occasions; it’s truly a work of art and class, really impeccable. The design is one that naturally fits into its location. It succeeds in trying to capture the older Central Park West character, and does so with style.

The Elysian is trying to be something it’s not; pretty self identifiable and explanatory.

The architect of this building obviously missed a very important lecture during college on aesthetics.

Elysian and 15 CPW have absolutely nothing in common.

Really? In my mind, they're products of the exact same philosophy working under two vastly different budgets. Stern was able to afford limestone in NY, but had to skimp on the carved details, producing an attractively simple, severe stripped-Classical building. LaGrange had to use precast, but he had enough budget left over to do all sorts of reveals and decorative flourishes that look abominable.

Stern also had a historic context to borrow from, so he could have been an absolutely mediocre architect and his building would still fit in if he just borrowed elements from the building's CPW neighbors.

Elysian is a Haussmanian skyscraper set amongst 1980s and 90s beige condo boxes. There's no historic context, at least none that even comes close to 686 feet. So it will stand out necessarily, and its flaws are thus highlighted.

Well, I thought I liked this building at first and then overtime, I just hate it more and more.

That's perfectly understandable, although usually people start off hating something, and over time just learn to get used to it.

While I really don't like the overall design of the tower, I believe (and sincerely hope) that once main construction is complete, those finishing touches that were mentioned in the renderings will make it easier on the eyes, if they decide to add them, that is.

Although, why most of the forumers' ire is concentrated on this building in particular and not 10 East Delaware - which is an absolute turd by any stretch of the definition - is beyond me...it must be because it's taller and more noticable
