51 days and counting. getting packed and today got a great furniture deal on overstock for the new sofa.. check it out... this sofa was 1099, and the chair was 579, but I got both as a set for 808, including shippting. a 900 dollar savings! got it in *white* (so keep your feet off it) and itll be here just in time for the move!

Anyone who has spent time with developer Angelo Sangiacomo knows how much he fancies fine stone — especially marble from the world-renowned quarries in Carrara, Italy.

But even by Sangiacomo’s standard, it’s surprising exactly how much expensive stonework has gone into his just-finished, self-financed $130 million apartment building at Trinity Place in San Francisco. Or the lengths to which he went to get it. On a recent tour of the lobby, Sangiacomo explained how he and his wife had ventured into the hills of Carrara to personally select just the right stone for the lobby.

“It was right on top of the mountain and it took us an hour to get up there,” said the 84-year-old Sangiacomo. “I’m a marble nut from way back.”

What they brought back was a black marble that, when sliced, had unusual white stripes through it. The marble paneling covers every inch of the lobby’s two-story back wall, including hideaway doors into the leasing office.

But the most impressive stone in the lobby is not even marble — it’s granite. The front desk of Trinity Place is a single piece of black granite from South Africa. It weighs 44 tons, about the size of a sperm whale. The stone was shipped first to Italy for carving, then to the port of Oakland. It was trucked to Trinity Place, where Sheedy Drayage Co. hoisted it into the lobby. From there it took two days to move it inch by inch across the lobby . . . .

He said he is eager to get going on the next building in order to keep employing general contractor Canon Constructors and the team of subcontractors.

“If we could get a little help from City Hall to get permitting through a little quicker, we are willing to start on the next one this year,” said Sangiacomo . . . .

Lots of good news here (and a little bad). No need to borrow money so there's a good chance this could happen. Some west-facing residents of the first phase may be disappointed to have their views blocked sooner than expected, however, and I'll be disappointed not to be rid of the decrepit existing building fronting Market St. I also wonder about the parking situation for residents with the underground garage delayed.

Looking at the renderings and site plan, I just don't see how the Market building has more units than the 1190 Mission building:

I would think the Mission building has more units, but according to the Business Times the Market building has more than twice as many units. I must be missing something here.

Curbed SF noticed the same thing and surmised there has been a design modification, splitting the second Mission St. building into 2 (or more?) separate buildings rather than one large one: "Renderings show no dainty building to the west of Phase I, so maybe they've broken it up a bit for Plan B." No doubt there will be design mods. As the project was in the last stages of approval and finalized versions of the "agreement" were being made.. I heard somewhere, maybe it was on sfgtv, or maybe the meeting I attended, I dont remember, but, there are plans to also maybe modify the market street design as well. I think the idea is has partly to do with the economy, and partly to do with the fact that the market street portion will be the sort of most "signature-y" part of the project, the jewel, and who can tell today, what the prefered style of architecture will be 10 years from now, and what the market street rules / heights/ neighboring developments/ will be/ look like so best to wait till last to make sure that what ever goes on our "grand boulevard" (cough) will be just right, at just the right time. Thats pure speculation on my part, if I was doin it, thats what Id do.

If the next mission building is goingto be 440 units, its the same size as building "A" then. So it will have to be disconected from the corner section that wraps around 8th. I hope they still do the cut out. We'll find out soon enough.

The first installment is now complete and has its formal opening next month, a 24-story slab that looks like a simplified Rubik's Cube and offers cause for both optimism and dread.

The optimism is that this first tower of what's called Trinity Plaza has a genuine presence, overscaled but energetic. The dread? The pieces still to come will pack the site so tightly that it becomes a forbidding megablock where architecture is irrelevant . . . .

Trinity Plaza will be the largest single residential complex built in San Francisco in at least 50 years. It will have a density of nearly 400 units per acre.

. . . the juxtaposition of silvery metal and beige concrete is barely discernable in the gray weather we've had of late. If those shades are replicated in each phase - especially if city planners let Sangiacomo replace metal panels with more concrete, as he'd like - the cumulative impact will be grim . . . .

Trinity Plaza is very much a work in progress - and no matter how well everything comes together, some passers-by will recoil at the show. Judging by the first piece, though, it's an experiment worth keeping an eye on.

that guy king is always blah blah blah about stuff. nothing he says means anything. the whole chron is like that now. The decline started with the loss of Herb Caen, and now that rag is an empty shell of its former self. The "writers" they have are just awful

and I don't think they have any idea what "investigate" (or grammar) means.
