SAN FRANCISCO | St Regis Hotel & Residences | 484 FT / 148 M | 42 FLOORS | 2005

Occupying a prime SOMA skyline spot fronting Yerba Buena Gardens, the St. Regis is an interesting study in form by Craig Hartman of SOM. The building incorporates an 9 story historic structure (Williams Building) that houses the Museum of African Diaspora and is adjacent to Mario Botta's Museum of Modern Art. The building is a simple 20 story hotel block with re-entrant corners, topped by a 20 story shaved block of 90 condominiums. The building is capped with a slanting, layered chrystalline parapet wall that creates an interesting form on the skyline. This wall is backlit at night, making the tower lighting some of the most distinctive in the city. Only the SW corner condo units have balconies, which are cantilevered out from the facade.

At 484ft, the building is the 23rd tallest in the city (21st when completed). Due to its location, the tower presents a distinct form in the skyline, particularly when compared with its nearby taller, but much blander Market Street boxes.

I was admiring this building last time in SF, the design is very simple and elegant. Even the glass color is subtle.

I like it! I also like how those balconies stick out from the rest of the building on that one side; I assume that's the residential portion of the building!

Those are the condo floors. The floors below are the hotel.

Sorry, again not one of my favorite SF buildings, though.

I have to agree, there are a number of buildings I love in SF from young to old, but this really isnt one of them...it isnt a bad building, but it is definitely not one of the buildings I went to SF to see with my own eyes.

What it does do, because it is on 3rd St which borders Yerba Buena Gardens, is create a wonderful urban "feel" at night with all its lights, which you get to appreciate as you come out of a movie or just stand at the big glass windows of the Metreon (a kind of shopping mall with a difference--soon to be less of a difference ). The Gardens is now pretty much surrounded by highrises, at least on the sides you can see from the lobby windows of the Metreon multiplex.
