I walked down the sidewalk on the re-done Pacific Blvd. today. It felt kinda wierd but it made the street seem far less freeway than before.

Are you serious????? If this street seemed like a "freeway" to you, this city really does need a wakeup call!

I wish it was keeping its open feel. most cities in the world have nice open avenues. But, it does look nice as long as the trees are trimmed and kept from becoming to big.

Maybe this street would have been prime for some palms, for they add some greenery without becoming to big and intrusive around here.

I believe it is a place holder for the eventual streetcar line.

Is it not a waste of money though to have built all this simply for a "temporary" fill in before the streetcar?

Why not simply have left it as is and then build the streetcar?

Also, knowing this city, once you plant a tree it will take months of public hearings and protests to tear it down! hehe.

About as wishful as saying the outdoor toilet facilities around the downtown area are placeholders for eventual teleportation pads.

^ lol, s211

looks kind of neat, a mini-prado. whenever the east end of pacific is finally built out and some good traffic kicks up, i bet it'll be a pretty popular little strip. especially when the benches and other furniture come in.

The other dumb thng is that the spacing of the trees will guarantee that half of them will have to be removed when they grow bigger because they've planted them so close together.
Hopefully we won't have dogowners and dogs running to the median for them to take a poop.

^^Don't they do that intentionally due to "mortality rates"?

Also re the protests that was my first thought too... why give em any more reason??

Or that the tree huggers will not let them cut it down and it will be permanent.

lol wut?

These stupid projects are even more frustrating considering the current state of the city's finances, and the facilities they are planning to close.

They built a sidewalk in the middle of the street? I'm not even mad... I'm impressed!

Good thing the city isn't short on money or else that sidewalk might look like a poor use of limited funds.

The new median looks great. This street has had a number of problems, among them:
1) the lanes were wider than average for downtown
2) the original trees were planted in small "boxes" that limited their ability to grow large

It's great to see part of the redesign plan implemented... it already gives it a more interesting human scale.

The bottom line is that it breaks up what was otherwise an inhospitable street. I guess it comes down to whether you prefer a nice pedestrian environment (like in Europe) or auto dominated one (like Houston, LA, etc.)

Im not taking sides on the issue but these comments are incredibly frustrating because they are so incredibly wrong. The pedestrian oriented parts of European cities are generally small parts of the old city centers, the rest of the cities are very much auto dependent, otherwise these European countries would be in the third world.

The street looks better but the sidewalk seems to be a pretty big waste of money and cement, though it is different.
