Didn't you know? It's a prerequisite to be accepted into the confederation.

We tore down our round tower in Calgary. I think it was a hotel at some point. Well before my time though.

Weird, because they all look different to me. They are all modern designs with somewhat similar outer faces, but they are all different in shape. I guess you don't notice the differences from afar.

The shape of most towers in Vancouver are consistent in that none of them are boxes but rather formed out of viewcones and neighbourly setbacks, resulting in wedges and elipses etc, but otherwise the colour is very similar as well as quality and scale of the massing as mandated by city hall...

...except I can't help but wonder why people only say that about Vancouver, when in fact the city probably has more variety than most places in the world with 600+ residential towers. And no small feat considering that the majority were built within the last 15-20 years, by about 5 developers, lol. I guess maybe Manhattan builds better quality condos?

I can't agree on Vancouver having more variety than most other places. Variety, however, is often overated.

Same style & massing (podium/point tower/crown-penthouse), with similar material and colours. That no two floorplates are the same is redundant.

I actually totally agree with this. Vancouver's urbanism has a very coherent look that it has cultivated for itself that is quite distinct. There's nothing wrong in my mind with uniformity as long as everything is uniformly attractive and good. Look at Paris, thousands and thousands of buildings of the same material and scale - but you can still see the distinct feautures up close.

It'd be a disservice to Vancouver to start dropping in precast gothic historicism among its glass towers for the sake of, "at least it's not another glass box" or to build glass towers on victorian inspired townhouse pedestal.

On that note, I love the black window frames on many of the concrete clad towers you see in the metro area.

Not the most flattering angle of Calgary's skyline but with the bow and eap it will get better.
