Anyway, the SAIT parkade (which was beyond ugly, I completely agree) was torn down because a replacement one was built under the field (Martin Cohos Commons) on the other side of campus. In place of the old parkade, a new academic building will be built the "Trades and Technology Centre."

I agree, in a general sense, that it isn't exactly a sustainable practice to tear things down well before their time though.

I think that once it is built, the 69th Street Station Parkade will look much better than the old SAIT parkade. That's not exactly hard to do though. The SAIT parkade was an eyesore.

I was just saying that there needs to be a new design.... someone submit one. I have to watch how I word things I guess.

Yep. Not to mention that every LRV we currently have has some form of facing seating already, whether its the front and back facing seating on the U2's or the inwards facing seating on the both the SD160's and U2's. The new design is really just taking the latter and doing it to the entire LRV, so its really nothing special.

As someone who commutes on the world's biggest subway system, I can ensure you that most people will do whatever they can to ignore your presence entirely... especially when their face is lodged into your armpit.

Seats that go down the length of the train always seem to fit way more people than pairs placed in rows. In the midst of rush-hour you dont really care about sitting down since you probably won't get to anyway. You just want as much breathing room between you and the next guy as possible.

I have to agree, with the current $3 fee, the lot will probably be as busy as the model shows (about a dozen cars). All of the park and ride lots are near empty, and people are parking wherever they can... for free. There is a park and ride lot behind Sunterra Market near the 69th Station and ever since the fee was implemented it has been empty... BUT... the parking lot of the Sunterra has been PACKED If they really want people to ride the train, even from the wealthy areas, they are going to have to lower or eliminate the fee. You just have to decide which is more important, getting people on the train, or collecting $3 from parking.

And yes, I know, people are stupid. They will willingly pay an exorbitant price to park downtown, but, at least they will BE downtown, and not have to take the train

And this is going a bit O/T, but you can't say 'all' the lots are empty. Crowfoot is usually 90% full every weekday, and if its cold out it has been completely full on a couple occasions. Dalhousie is usually pretty full as well, not always 100% but close to it when I've been in there.

For the record- after today's snowfall, it took me two and a half hours to get from the intersection of Crowchild and Bow Trail, to 69th and 17 Av!

Cannot think of a better reason to get the West Leg of the LRT built.

We needed to walk downtown to get to company Christmas party - no bus or cab could make the hill. LRT will be good.

As a update - nothing happening, really. Tentative construction start date is February/March, and I'm sure SNC is pretty busy getting their plan in place. Noted some geotechical work around the pedestrian overpass in the park; the demolition of the seniors home is now done.

At least you can easily hoop off a bus if it craps out. De-training without a platform looks tricky.

This will be way, way nicer than the SAIT parkade. Large parking garages are certainly better than even larger surface parking and this one seems to have an interesting cladding. The landscape and transit plaza between it and the station also looks pretty good to me.

As someone who commutes on the soon-to-be world's biggest subway system ( ) I agree with this sentiment. Putting seats only along the walls of the train is far more efficient than having them perpendicular to the walls, and significantly increases capacity - a standing person takes up significantly less space than a sitting person does. It's no wonder that pretty much every large metro system in the world uses this form of seating, and not the perpendicular seating found on many LRT systems.
