To bad it couldn't be another 100 feet taller, but in my mind it's a damned fine looking building. Love the steel cladding and look forward to seeing it back lit. Are the holes all different sizes? If so, what kinda designs do they make, if they make em?

i moved the pictures to this new page. the holes are different sizes but i couldn't make out any particular pattern.

here's some updates from this morning. i love this metal cladding! talk about different. the effect is really cool. i'm sure there will be backlighting which will look neat coming through those tiny holes. it's like ghery meets tetris..

they were in the process of removing all the hoarding

Those are great pics Delirium! The tower itself is still meh for me but the base/ podium looks spectacular. The diversity and quality of materials used sets a whole new precedent for Vancouver. I hope you don't mind me reposting these in the Canada section.

and i totally agree with you. the materials used here are exceptional. i've seen stone, marble, steel, glass, limestone. it's definitely 5*.

The base of the Fairmont is damn near perfect. It's completely above and beyond anything I expected.

If I could change anything on the the tower it would be to remove that protruding box, unify the glazing colour to the darker tint on the south face of the building, and add 150-200 ft in height as well as some sort of crown made of that same metal cladding just unveiled.

I think that would make the tower too top heavy and less interesting. As it stands, the mix of shapes in the podium is nicely echoed in the "box" portion of the tower, even if it isn't the most original design. Rather than adding height to the tower, it may have looked better proportioned if slimmer.

Looks much better without the blue covering! I think this building is awesome! I really think it is the right height, however I wish the design of the top would be a little less bland and something more like the Georgia with LED lighting IMO..

I suppose that would be more the developers fault. It is curious they would have no retail (though I wouldn't think foot traffic is that high, which retailers like), but they will have several nice restaurants.

Retail should have been apart of this, or for that matter apart of any building on a major street. Right now it makes the Fairmont too inclusive and while i recognize that is part of their 'brand', it is poor 'cityship'.

The Hotel Vancouver has plenty of retail, so I'm not sure they neglected to have retail due to "image".

It's not like they'd have a bong shop. What kind of retail is near it? Like I said, I don't think foot traffic would generally be high enough all of the time to make it worthwhile to a business owner.

Stare at this pic long enough and let your eyes blur out a bit (focus behind the pic) -
the pattern looks like a BC rainforest scene. The verticals are Douglas Fir tree trunks.
It's like the panels at the foot of Davie Street @ Marinaside - should look great with backlighting.

BTW - great pics - love the north side of the podium.

who says there is no retail? there is.

from the DP report:
"1.2 design development to extend active uses and provide further glazing at specific sidewalk frontages to maximize pedestrian interest;

Very interesting, thanks for the new set of photos. This isn't something we can tell from the previous renderings!!

I wonder how it looks from inside of the Convention Centre (notice how the lobby of the Convention Centre is at the same height as the first few floors of Fairmont.)

The metal artwork is on the Cordova side (back side) - but should provide a great view for the diners at the restaurant in Guinness Tower.

funny you should mention that restaurant. i didn't realize it was there until i walked by. the place looks fantastic! it's called Miku. www.mikurestaurant.com
the website has video of the inside. it's also the first of its kind in north america.

their speciality is Aburi style sushi which means; very lightly flame-seared, often topped with something, and paired with savoury French sauces. they decided to open in Vancouver because of our love of sushi and competitive restaurant scene.
