Speaking of lighting, when are they supposed to install some of the specific lighting for the Olympics (bridges, a few buildings, etc)? I know it's been talked about at some point, but I couldn't find the references here.

I seem to recall some of those lighting features were to remain in place afterward.

A bit off topic I admit... but is that restaurant still there? It was absolutely fabulous.

I could have sworn that as I left Vancouver yesterday on the Skytrain that the top of the Shangri-La was lit up. Was I going crazy? Was it a reflection?

Shangri-La lighting

I have noticed for the past few months that in fact, there *is* lighting atop the Shangri-La. It seems to be shining up through the trees behind the glass panels on top on the north and east sides. Not all the panels are lit, and the effect is pretty lame. Not bright enough to be seen from any real distance, and it's just regular white light. Almost better to have nothing at all lit than this. Very underwhelming.

Here is a night skyline shot I took a couple weeks ago. Whatever lighting the Shangri-La has is certainly underwhelming.

Reporting that the Light/art installation along 2 blocks of Kingsway is complete and turned on.

It is 2 sets of 3 lamp posts in the median, the 1st series on Kingsway south of Knight is in 3 tone of blue. The series after Knight is in green, redish, and blue. All very muted like glowing ice. The top also kinda looks like a christmas bulb with a bit if a twist - as if it was a flame.

I'll try to have pictures up soon.

I agree. The lighting of the Shangri-La is quite underwhelming. I thought it was going to be much brighter. It certainly doesn't stand out at all, besides it's height.

I wouldn't expect much lighting on top of Shangri-La - it's residential - what's up there would amount to patio lights for the roof deck.

i don't think it's completely out of character to assume that our tallest building would have some sort of lighting at the top.

furthermore, because it's residential does not matter. most new condos today have rooftop lighting. see Espana, Elan, the melville, dolce & vita, l'hermitage, carina, shaw, etc etc.

so begs the question, why not shangri-la? it's not like anyone will be blinded by the light -

Come on man. For a while there you were leading us on a string about how there "might be something" in the way of a logo. Hinting at dates and such, then none of that ever happened. You also mentioned how the crane retracts and hides away, glad to see thats working too.

I think the difference with Shangri-La is that the roof is a private roof deck for the penthouses - whereas other towers have purely mechanical "penthouses" so any lighting is out of view of the "primo" residents. In some cases, the roof deck may be a shared amenity - which would allow some lighting to be maintained with minimal impact.

Officedweller is correct, this isn't like most towers, the Ritz if built as proposed will be similar, those are the penthouse owners patio space. My hinting was pretty vague and I know it was taken as lightning but there was never going to be any lighting or logo on top. Sorry for playing along but I was not at liberty to release details.

On a positive the W sign will look great and I'll let you guys know when the grand revealing will be.

Are they the penthouse owners' patios, or the strata's patios?

1) Dig evergreen tunnel
2) Destroy pagodas at Robson Sq.
3) Clean Sears building
4) Blockade Granville to cars
5) Purchase a majority ownership in units at the SGL and pass a strata bylaw commandeering the penthouse's balcony common area, adding exciting lighting thereafter.

CTV has a hd camera on the roof of Shangri-La. There must be room for a light beacon for planes at least?

You should always take with a grain of salt anything you read on an anonymous bulletin board where people don't even use their real names.

For me the Shangri-la having no lighting on top is the fault of the city, for they are the ones that allowed it through their insanely rigid design guidelines without having any lighting feature placed upon the city's tallest building near the heart of the commercial/business district.

And at the very least it should have beacons on top being so close to an active plane harbour.

Here in Osaka it seems that if a tower is over 100m it has flight beacons on top, and it does not make a difference if they are residential, office or hotel, they all need them. This is true for almost every city I have been in except Vancouver.

I dont know, to me having the tallest "Signature" tower of the city have absolutely no lighting features on it, simply because it is "residential" and has an owner's patio at the top, is beyond silly. I guess there should be no washing crane either because what owner wants that in their patio as well...

The Shaw Tower is also mainly residential, yet it has a nice lighting feature running along its entire length and a logo on top?

Go figure...

Also I wonder if there are any other Shangri-La hotels in the world where its logo is no where to be seen on the tower itself.

Underwhelming is an under statement.

I really hope that the same mistake is not made wit the ritz, at the very least a simple white rim at the top akin to that found on countless other condo towers in this city would even be welcomed over nothing....again.....

Yes, underwhelming is an under statement. It's understated. It's Vancouver. Seaplanes don't fly over downtown. Would it be great to have an office tower with a signature lighted crown? Absolutely. Do I think the Wall Centre looks great at night? Absolutely. Do we need to infringe on someone's patio space when they spent 17 million on an apartment purely for some peoples' aesthetic wishes? No. You and I are like Waiting for Godot with this thing. . .

I personally find our retail/entertainment/tourism streets in Vancouver are too dark. Every year I trick myself into believing that my eyes are getting dimmer until I go off for another vacation and realize that Vancouver is just dark (Nearly 2 stops, in fact, when measuring by my camera).

Lighting on Granville always seemed overpowered by its weak and orange street lights. I find my eyes had to work harder in those dark lighting conditions. Many people I know won't walk Granville and many other downtown streets at night alone because they feel unsafe. There are many studies done that shows how brighter streets makes people feel safer so whats the big hold up?

Also, I have no proof for this but I genuinely think that dimly lit streets also contribute to people acting more like douchebags. I guess they feel more confident to be retards when they believe the dark is hiding their faces.

Anywho, to finish off my rant, I really hope Vancouver gets some brighter street lamps and signage.
